DESPITE EXTREME POLITICAL INSTABILITY AND VIOLENCE IN HAITI AND CITE SOLEIL IN PARTICULAR THE SAKALA COMMUNITY CENTER PROVIDED DAILY SERVICES TO YOUTHS IN THE AREA IN ITS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM ITS SUMMER CAMP ITS URBAN GARDEN THE LARGEST IN HAITI ITS NATIONALLY KNOWN CHESS PROGRAM AND ITS PEACE-THROUGH-SPORTS INITIATIVE. THOSE ARE THE BIG CONCRETE ACCOMPLISHMENTS PERHAPS SAKALA'S MOST IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY IS TO PROVIDE A SAFE PLACE TO PLAY LEARN AND GROW IN A COUNTRY WHERE THAT IS ALL TOO RARE. BECAUSE OF THE GRANTS FROM SAKALA INTERNATIONAL MADE FROM 1000S OF INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS FROM PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD THE SAKALA COMMUNITY CENTER WAS ABLE TO MAKE PAYROLL EVERY MONTH AND MEET ALL PROGRAM EXPENSES.
