Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

IN 2022, ISLAND REACH (IR) CONTINUED OUR COLLABORATION WITH THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION UNITED PURPOSE BANGLADESH (UPB) TO BUILD RURAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS AND AGROECOLOGICAL FOOD SYSTEMS. IR CAME ALONGSIDE UPB TO SUPPORT THE CREATION AND GROWTH OF A NEW MODEL OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE COLLECTIVE CALLED NARI JHURI, WITH A VISION OF SAFE FOOD, HEALTHY LIVES, AND A SUSTAINABLE PLANET. THE IR TEAM SPENT THE MONTH OF APRIL IN BANGLADESH, OFFERING A SERIES OF 6 WORKSHOPS FOR 45 STAFF ATTENDING FROM BOTH UPB CENTRAL OFFICE IN DHAKA AND FROM REGIONAL FIELD OFFICES. IR DESIGNED WORKSHOPS TO BUILD STAFF KNOWLEDGE AND CAPACITY TO SUPPORT AGROECOLOGICAL TRANSITIONS AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF MARKETS FOR AGROECOLOGICAL PRODUCTS FOR RURAL WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS.

DURING OUR TIME IN BANGLADESH, THE ISLAND REACH TEAM TRAVELED WITH UNITED PURPOSE BANGLADESH (UPB) STAFF TO MEET WITH WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS AND SMALL-SCALE FARMERS IN THE JAMALPUR REGION AND THE CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS. WITH TRANSLATIONS FROM STAFF, TOGETHER WE TRIALED PARTICIPATORY ACTIVITIES FOR BUILDING AGROECOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND MARKETS, INCLUDING COMMUNITY WALKS, ROLE PLAY, AND VALUE WEB DESIGN. WE ALSO LED A 1-DAY CONFERENCE IN RANGAMATI CITY FOR 55 WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS REPRESENTING THE WOMEN'S BUSINESS CENTERS OF THE CHITTAGONG HILL TRACTS.

OVER THE COURSE OF 6 MONTHS, WITH WEEKLY ONLINE MEETINGS WITH UPB STAFF, WE DESIGNED A TOOLKIT FOR WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS AND FACILITATORS THAT FULLY DEVELOPS THE CONCEPT OF THE VALUE WEB, AN ISLAND REACH APPROACH TO SUPPORT AGROECOLOGICAL TRANSITIONS AND SOCIAL ENTERPRISE. THE TOOLKIT, COMPRISED OF TWO MANUALS, PLAY CARDS, AND OTHER MATERIALS, WILL BE LAUNCHED IN 2023.
