Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

OUR PRIMARY PROGRAM IS THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD. WE DID NOT ISSUE A NEW AWARD IN THIS FISCAL YEAR, HOWEVER OUR FOLLOW UP ON PREVIOUSLY ISSUED TRAILBLAZER RECIPIENTS INDICATES THAT FOLLOWING OUR INITIAL FUNDING THE FIRST COHORT HAD A 30 TIMES INCREASE IN FUNDING AND THE SECOND COHORT HAD A 2 TIMES INCREASE IN THEIR FIRST YEAR. THESE PROJECTS MOST LIKELY WOULD NOT HAVE RECEIVED FUNDING IF NOT FOR THE TRAILBLAZER AWARD.

THE FOUNDATION HIRED A FULL TIME SOFTWARE DEVELOPER TO CREATE A DONATION PLATFORM FOR FUNDRAISING. 1907 FOUNDATION IS CURRENTLY USING THIS SOFTWARE FOR A FUND RAISING PROGRAM CALLED MENTALLY TOUGH.

THE CHARITY IDENTIFIED A NEED FOR A GRANT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM THAT WOULD ALLOW RESEARCHERS TO APPLY A SINGLE TIME FOR MULTIPLE GRANT OPPORTUNITIES. THE PROGRAM ALSO PROVIDES FOR BLINDED APPLICATION REVIEW TO REMOVE ANY BIAS FROM THE FUNDING PROCESS. THIS SOFTWARE IS BEING DEVELOPED BY THE CHARITY AND WILL IN FUTURE WILL BE LICENSED TO MULTIPLE FUNDING ORGANIZATIONS. THE CURRENT EXPENSES ARE BEING CAPITALIZED ON THE BALANCE SHEET WITH AMORTIZATION STRAIGHT LINE OVER FIVE YEARS.

PURPOSE: A metabolic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Recent findings in human genetics have implicated dozens of metabolic enzymes of unknown functions in psychiatric disorders. This presents a huge opportunity to overcome the limitations of the mainstream focus on neurotransmitters in the chemical imbalance theory of mental illness, where results have been stymied by ineffective treatments, difficult side effects, and the lack of molecular biomarkers. Our goal is to identify the roles of these novel brain enzymes to create transformative knowledge of biochemical mechanisms that cause mental illness. We expect our findings to enable novel metabolic approaches for the diagnosis and treatment of a range of psychiatric conditions.

PURPOSE: How women's brains change over pregnancy and the implications for peripartum and postpartum mental illness. Pregnancy is an extremely high-risk time window for developing mental illness. One in five women will experience mental illness during or following pregnancy. Brain scans, paired with biological and emotional measures, could help show why and how these illnesses develop, but scientists almost never scan pregnant women. Recently, impactful safety studies indicated that MRIs can be safe during pregnancy. Our study proposes to scan women repeatedly over pregnancy, within safety limits, while tracking their hormone levels and mood. We will detect, in individual women, how brains change over pregnancy, and what specific kinds of structural and functional brain changes can mark or predict peripartum mental illness.
