UMOJA MAGAZINE'S SIGNATURE ACTIVITY IS THE ANNUAL PUBLICATION OF 11 PRINT MAGAZINES THAT FEATURE POSITIVE STORIES AND COMMUNITY SERVICE MESSAGES BY AND ABOUT THE BLACK COMMUNITY IN MADISON, WISCONSIN AND BEYOND. THE STORIES IN EACH ISSUE ARE SUPPLEMENTED BY EXTENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHY AND ORIGINAL ARTWORK. EACH ISSUE OF THE MAGAZINE IS THEMED AROUND AN IMPORTANT PUBLIC SERVICE MESSAGE. IN ADDITION TO THESE ONGOING TOPICS, OCCASIONAL SPECIAL ISSUES ARE PRODUCED TO FOCUS ON TIMELY TOPICS SUCH AS COVID-19 IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, BLACK EXCELLENCE IN OUR SCHOOLS, AND OTHERS. TO FURTHER OUR REACH AND MISSION, UMOJA LAUNCHED AN ONLINE VERSION OF THE MAGAZINE IN EARLY 2021. THIS WILL ALLOW OUR IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL CONTENT TO REACH MORE PEOPLE. IT WILL ALSO ALLOW US THE OPPORTUNITY TO DELIVER IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL CONTENT AND PUBLIC SERVICE MESSAGES IN BETWEEN ISSUES OF THE PRINT PUBLICATION. THE UMOJA MAGAZINE YOUTH VOICES PROJECT IS A NEW PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH WITH A SERIES OF CREATIVE WRITING AND MEDIA ARTS WORKSHOPS THAT CULMINATE IN A SPECIAL BLACK EXCELLENCE YOUTH VOICES ISSUES OF UMOJA MAGAZINE. THE PROGRAM TEACHES YOUTH WRITING AND MEDIA ARTS SKILLS, EXPOSES THEM TO CAREERS IN WRITING AND PRINT AND DIGITAL MEDIA, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, UPLIFTS THE STORIES AND EXPERIENCES OF BLACK YOUTH WHICH HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY CRITICAL DURING THESE STRESSFUL AND UNCERTAIN TIMES.
