LEVERAGES PRESERVATION TO CREATE STABLE, SUSTAINABLE, EQUITABLE, VIBRANT & HEALTHY COMMUNITIES.THE STABILIZATION, REPAIR, AND REACTIVATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS CAN SERVE AS A POWERFUL TOOL TO ANCHOR REINVESTMENT AND CATALYZE HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE, PROSPEROUS, EQUITABLE COMMUNITIES. OUR EFFORTS TO DATE HAVE MATERIALLY AND POSITIVELY IMPACTED COUNTLESS BUILDINGS, STAKEHOLDERS, AND COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT CHICAGO.

IN 2021, WE PLAYED A DECISIVE ROLE IN THE 11TH HOUR RESCUE OF THE LAKE STREET SCHLITZ TIED HOUSE/FORMER LA LUCE RESTAURANT BUILDING FROM IMMINENT DEMOLITION AND ITS DESIGNATION AS A CHICAGO LANDMARK TO CREATE PERMANENT PROTECTION. AFTER YEARS OF ADVOCACY, WE PLAYED A CRUCIAL ROLE IN THE EMMETT TILL & MAMIE TILL-MOBLEY HOME FINALLY BECOMING A RECOGNIZED AND PROTECTED DESIGNATED CHICAGO LANDMARK. FINAL STATUS WAS APPROVED FOR THE 15-BUILDING NEAR NORTH LANDMARK DISTRICT WHICH SAVED THE SUPERIOR STREET ROWHOUSES FROM DEMOLITION. WE PLAYED AN ESSENTIAL ROLE IN PROTECTING ARTS AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS THROUGH CHICAGO IN GENERAL AND EMERGING BLACK HOUSE MUSEUMS IN PARTICULAR, THROUGH AN EFFORT TO DEFEAT A PROPOSED HOUSE MUSEUM BAN ORDINANCE. WE PLAYED IMPORTANT ROLES IN THE CHICAGO LANDMARK DESIGNATION OF THE THE MUDDY WATERS HOUSE, SETH WARNER HOUSE, HALSTED-WILLOW GROUP, AND MONASTERY OF THE HOLY CROSS/IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, LITTLE VILLAGE ARCH, CHICAGO & NORTH WESTERN RAILWAY HEADQUARTERS BUILDING, PERKINS-NORDINE HOUSE, AND EAST SIDE SCHLITZ TIED HOUSE. WE CELEBRATED POST-RESTORATION SUCCESS OF COOK COUNTY HOSPITAL, OLD MAIN POST OFFICE, AND CHICAGO UNION STATION. IN 2021 PRESERVATION CHICAGO PLAYED AN ACTIVE ADVOCACY ROLE IN HELPING TO BRING ABOUT PRESERVATION-SENSITIVE OUTCOMES FOR THE PULLMAN NATIONAL MONUMENT, LU PALMER MANSION, FANNIE MAY HOUSE, VAUTRAVERS BUILDING, LARAMIE STATE BANK, RAMOVA THEATER, PIONEER STATE BANK, PATIO THEATER, CONGRESS THEATER, LINCOLN PARK ZOO LION HOUSE, CLARENDON PARK FIELD HOUSE, ST. BONIFACE, EPIPHANY CENTER FOR ARTS/FORMER EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY, MORTON SALT COMPLEX, LUDLOW TYPOGRAPHY COMPANY/ANIXTER BUILDING JEFFERSON PARK FIREHOUSE, IIT MAIN BUILDING, FORMER JEWEL LAUNDRY BUILDING/ETHIOPIAN COMMUNITY CENTER, CHICAGO WORKERS COTTAGE INITIATIVE, AND SO MANY OTHERS.WE WORKED TO SUPPORT THE CHICAGO LANDMARK DESIGNATIONS OF WILLOW HALSTED GROUP, PERKINS-NORDINE HOUSE, EAST SIDE SCHLITZ BREWERY TIED HOUSE, SUPERIOR STREET ROWHOUSES/NEAR NORTH LANDMARK DISTRICT, MT. PISGAH MISSIONARY CHURCH/SINAI TEMPLE, AND BLACKWELL-ISRAEL SAMUEL A.M.E. ZION CHURCH.INCREASED STAFF CAPACITY HAS YIELDED AN INCREASE IN MISSION-DRIVEN ACTIVITIES. WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO ADVOCATE FOR MORE BUILDINGS, RAISE MORE FUNDS, SPEAK AT MORE HEARINGS AND PUBLIC MEETINGS, HOLD MORE EVENTS AND EDUCATIONAL TOURS, GIVE MORE NEWSPAPER INTERVIEWS, WRITE MORE COMPREHENSIVE NEWSLETTERS, AND ENGAGE MORE ON SOCIAL MEDIA. THESE ACTIVITIES RESULTED IN MORE BUILDINGS SAVED, MORE PRESERVATION-ORIENTED DECISIONS, AND GREATER ATTENTION TO LOST BUILDINGS WITH THE LONG-TERM VISION OF CATALYZING HEALTHY, SUSTAINABLE, PROSPEROUS, EQUITABLE CHICAGO COMMUNITIES.1.
