Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN 2020 WE LAUNCHED A CAREGIVER AND INFANT SUPPORT PROGRAM. MBB IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION IN THE STATE PROVIDING ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO VULERNABLE INFANTS AND THEIR IMPRISONED MOTHER. WE PROVIDE THE TANGIBLE ITEMS THAT INFANTS NEED TO THRIVE. FORTY FAMILIES IN GEORGIA HAVE BEEN ENROLLED IN A TWO YEAR RESEARCH PROGRAM WERE CONDUCTING WITH HARVARDS T.H. CHAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH. THIS RESEARCH SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND THE DEPTH OF INEQUITIES IN CHILDING WELL BEING CREATED BY INCARCERATION AND HOW TO BEST CREATE OR AMEND CHILD WELFARE AND SOCIAL SUPPORT POLICIES AND PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS THESE INEQUITIES.
MOTHERHOOD BEYOND BARS REENTRY AND REUNIFICATION PROGRAM BEGINS WITH THE PROCESS OF PLANNING FOR A SUCCESSFUL REENTRY, FROM THE FIRST INTERACTION WITH PREGNANT WOMEN IN PRISON. IN MAY 2020, WE HIRED OUR FIRST FULLTIME PROGRAM STAFF WHO IS ALSO A FORMERLY INCARCERATED MOTHER. WE BELIEVE THE BEST CHANCE OF A HEALTHY AND LONG-LASTING REUNIFICATION RESTS ON PROVIDING ONGOING SUPPORT TO CAREGIVERS AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES TO DEVELOP STRONG BONDS BETWEEN MOTHER AND THEIR INFANTS AND MOTHER AND CAREGIVER. MAINTAINING CONTACT BETWEEN MOTHERS AND INFANTS IS IMPERATIVE, NOT JUST FOR THE MOTHER IN PRISON, BUT FOR THE HEALTHLY ATTACHMENT OF THE INFANT TO THEIR MOTHER. ONCE THE MOTHER LEAVES PRISON HOWEVER, THE REENTRY JOURNEY IS COMPLICATED AND THE NEED FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORT IS NECESSARY TO PROMOTE FAMILY REUNIFICATION AND THE THE RISK OF RECIDIVISM. MBB PROVIDES REENTRY SUPPORT TO THE WHOLE FAMILY.
MOTHERHOOD BEYOND BARS HAS A PREGNANCY AND CHILDBIRTH CURRICULA SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR JUSTICE-INVOLVED WOMEN AND HAVE TRAINED CHILDBIRTH DOULAS READY TO PROVIDE COMPASSIONATE AND CULTURALLY SENSITIVE SUPPORT. MBB PROVIDES COMPASSIONATE, EVIDENCED-BASED SUPPORT TO WOMEN IN COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS PROGRAMS. MOTHERHOOD BEYOND BARS WILL ACCEPT REFERRALS FROM DCS AND FROM WOMEN CURRENTLY ON PROBATION AND PAROLE THROUGH A PORTAL ON OUR WEBSITE ENROLLMENT IN OUR PROGRAMS WILL NOT BE A MANDATORY CONDITION OR OF THEIR PAROLE OR PROBATION.
