STRONG READERS STRONG LEADERS (SRSL) SEEKS TO BUILD BOTH LITERACY AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS IN THE SMALLEST OF OUR LEADERS. THIS DIAGNOSTIC PRESCRIPTIVE READING PROGRAM PROVIDED ELEMENTARY AGE CHILDREN WITH TOOLS TO STRENGTHEN THEIR READING AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS. DEVELOPED WITH THE HELP OF PROFESSIONAL READING SPECIALISTS, THE SRSL PROGRAM ALSO REQUIRES A PRE-AND-POST LITERACY TEST TO GAUGE EACH STUDENT'S IMPROVEMENT.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO SHARE THEIR CONCERNS AND DREAMS FOR THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. IT ALSO PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO LEAD LOCAL INITIATIVES WHICH ADDRESS THEIR CONCERNS. THIS ENGAGEMENT HAS LED TO THE STRENGTHENING OF THE COMMUNITY AS WELL AS THEIR CAPACITY TO WORK TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY. LAST YEAR WE WERE ABLE TO ADD A SCREEN ON THE GREEN MOVIE SHOWING FOR OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO ENJOY WITH THEIR FAMILIES.
COMMUNITY RESOURCE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMMING WAS DEVELOPED IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. COMUNIDAD MOBILIZED LOCAL COMMUNITY AND NONPROFIT PARTNERS TO RESPOND TO THE INCREASE IN FOOD INSECURITY ON A MONTHLY BASIS THANKS TO LOCALLY-ROOTED COMMUNITY LEADERS. THANKS TO ONE OF COMUNIDADS LOCALLY-ROOTED COMMUNITY LEADERS, A DECISION WAS MADE TO PARTNER WITH THE CAPITAL AREA FOOD BANK TO PROVIDE A MONTHLY FOOD DISTRIBUTION IN SEVEN CORNERS, A NEIGHBORHOOD IN FALLS CHURCH. SINCE SEPTEMBER OF 2020, THIS MONTHLY FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROVIDS FOOD FOR NEARLY 300 FAMILIES AND INDIVIDUALS, INCLUDING RECENTLY ARRIVED AFGHAN FAMILIES.
