TO PRESERVE AND CARRY ON THE EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE TRADITIONS AND CEREMONIES OF THE DRAGON SENIOR SOCIETY ORGANIZATION WHICH, SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1898, HAS PROMOTED THE IDEALS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, COMMUNITY SERVICE, LEADERSHIP, HIGH MORAL PURPOSE, AND RESPECT FOR THE TRADITIONS OF THE COLLEGE; AND TO TRAIN AND EDUCATE SELECTED UNDERGRADUATE MEMBERS OF DARTMOUTH COLLEGE TO BECOME PROSPECTIVE LEADERS OF THE COLLEGE, LOCAL,NATIONAL, AND GLOBAL COMMUNITIES.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
EDUCATION IN 2023, THE FOUNDATION ORGANIZED AND FULLY UNDERWROTE TWO PRIMARY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. THE FIRST PROGRAM IS AN ANNUAL DAY OF CAREER PANELS AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERGRADUATES IN BOSTON. THE UNDERGRADUATES ARE EXPOSED TO INSIGHTS AND ADVICE FROM INDUSTRY EXPERTS THROUGH BOTH ROUND-TABLE PANELIST DISCUSSIONS AND OPEN-FORMAT Q&A. DIRECTLY FOLLOWING THE PANEL DISCUSSIONS, THE FOUNDATION ORGANIZES AND UNDERWRITES A NETWORKING EVENT TO PROVIDE THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE THEIR NETWORKING SKILLS WITH LOCAL ALUMNI. THE FOUNDATION ALSO PLANS AND UNDERWRITES AN ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL WEBINAR SERIES PROVIDING ADDITIONAL UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AS WELL AS CONTINUING EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR DARTMOUTH ALUMNI. IN ADDITION TO THE TWO FORMAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES INFORMAL MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES TO THE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS THROUGH ONGOING ALUMNI OUTREACH AND HOSTING ALUMNI VISITS TO THE DRAGON BUILDING. THE FOUNDATION ALSO MAKES THE DRAGON FACILITY AVAILABLE TO THE UNDERGRADUATE MEMBERS, WHO TYPICALLY MAKE EXTENSIVE USE OF THE BUILDING. THE FOUNDATION MAINTAINS THE FACILITY'S WIRELESS AND HIGH SPEED CONNECTIVITY TO ENSURE THE STRONGEST SUPPORT OF UNDERGRADUATE LEARNING ACTIVITIES. UNDERGRADUATES MAKE USE OF THE DRAGON BUILDING'S STUDY AND MEETING SPACES THROUGH PEER-DRIVEN LEARNING ACTIVITIES INCLUDING INFORMAL ACADEMIC DISCOURSE, FULFILLMENT OF GROUP LEADERSHIP ROLES, GROUP GOAL SETTING AND PLANNING, COMMUNITY SERVICE PLANNING, AND BASIC FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES.
COMMUNITY SERVICE THE UNDERGRADUATE MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO ORGANIZE AND PARTICIPATE IN AT LEAST ONE COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITY ANNUALLY. IN 2023 THE UNDERGRADUATE MEMBERS UNDERTOOK TWO PROGRAMS. THE FIRST PROJECT CONSISTED OF OUTDOOR SPRING CLEAN-UP AND MEAL PREPARATION FOR A LOCAL NON-PROFIT THAT PROVIDES TEMPORARY SHELTER AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES AND ADULTS AS WELL AS FOOD SUPPORT. THE FOUNDATION PROVIDED THE SAME NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION WITH A CHARITABLE DONATION. THE SECOND COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT THE UNDERGRADUATE MEMBERS PARTICIPATED IN WAS A RACE TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AT DARTMOUTH. A TEAM OF UNDERGRADUATES RAISED MORE THAN 4,500 TO SUPPORT THE CAUSE, AND THE FOUNDATION MADE A CHARITABLE DONATION TO SUPPORT THE UNDERGRADUATES' PROJECT. FINALLY, THE FOUNDATION MADE A CHARITABLE DONATION TO A FUND, WHICH SUPPORTS RESEARCH FOCUSED ON BOTH THE TREATMENT OF AND CURE FOR KIDNEY CANCER, AT THE DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE.
HISTORICAL PRESERVATION THE FOUNDATION IS COMMITTED TO PRESERVING THE 125-YEAR HISTORY AND HISTORICAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE DARTMOUTH DRAGON SENIOR SOCIETY ON OBSERVATORY ROAD IN HANOVER, NH. IN 2023 THE FOUNDATION UNDERWROTE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH MAINTAINING AND PRESERVING THE HISTORICAL PHYSICAL STRUCTURE.
