BOOKS FOR COLLIER KIDS GIVES BOOKS TO MORE THAN 10,000 CHILDREN A YEAR IN 375 CLASSROOMS TO TITLE I SCHOOLS WHERE MORE THAN 75% OF THE STUDENTS RELY ON THE FREE OR REDUCED-COST MEAL PROGRAM, IN COLLIER COUNTY, FL. BCK GIVES A BOOK A MONTH THROUGH-OUT THE SCHOOL YEAR TO CHILDREN IN PRE-K, KINDERGARDEN, FIRST- AND SECOND-GRADE CLASSROOMS, THE CRITICAL AGE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF READING SKILLS. IN 2021, BCK PROVIDED MORE THAN 93,000 BOOKS TO TITLE I ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.
BOOKS FOR COLLIER KIDS (BCK) WORKS CLOSELY WITH A VARETY OF MORE THAN 20 LOCAL NON-PROFIT AGENCIES TO ENSURE THAT CHILDREN IN NEED HAVE BOOKS TO TAKE HOME, SHARE AND CHERISH. BCK WORKS WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TO PROVIDE 15+ AGE-APPROPRIATE BOOKS TO OVER 100 HOME DEDICATIONS EACH YEAR. BCK WORKS WITH BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, THE SHELTER FOR ABUSED WOMEN, FRIENDS OF FOSTER CHILDREN FOREVER, GUADALUPE CENTER, GRACE PLACE AND MANY OTHERS TO SUPPORT THEIR READING PROGRAMS, PROVIDE RESPITE AND SECURITY. IN 2021, NEARLY 9,000 BOOKS WERE DISTRIBUTED VIA COLLABORATIONS.
SUMMER SLIDE OCCURS WHEN CHILDREN DON'T READ OVER THE SUMMER AND THE FACT THAT STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT ACTIVELY READING OVER THE SUMMER EXPERIENCE SIGNIFICANT, CUMULATIVE READING SKILL LOSS. THIS LOSS ESPECIALLY AFFECTS CHILDREN FROM LOW-INCOME HOMES. THIS 2021 SUMMER, BCK DONATED 16,700 NEW BOOKS TO NUMEROUS SUMMER PROGRAMS SUCH AS BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, MANATEE AND PARK SIDE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, GRACE PLACE AND SALVATION ARMY.
