STUDENT INITIATIVESIN 2023, THE SOCIETY BEGAN A NEW APPROACH TO ITS EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES. THOUGH THE JUDITH S. KAYE TEACHING FELLOWSHIP HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL, IT WAS TIME TO EXPAND BEYOND BARD HIGH SCHOOL EARLY COLLEGE TO REACH NEW SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS WITH IMPORTANT CURRICULUM ABOUT THE ROLE OF THE COURTS IN SOCIETY, FEDERALISM, AND LEGAL HISTORY. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS, THE SOCIETY CONTRACTED WITH A RESIDENT EDUCATION FELLOW. THE FELLOW HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE COURT SYSTEM, INCLUDING BUILDING A DATABASE OF JUDGES, ATTORNEYS, AND COURT PERSONNEL TO BRING TO STUDENTS TO COURTHOUSES AND LEGAL PROFESSIONALS TO CLASSROOMS. THE FELLOW PARTICIPATED IN GUEST LECTURES TO TEACHERS-IN-TRAINING AND A SYMPOSIUM ON EDUCATION. - RESIDENT EDUCATION FELLOW: A STIPEND OF $20,000 WAS GRANTED FOR A YEAR-LONG FELLOWSHIP TO FACILITATE CONNECTIONS WITH EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND DEVELOP RELEVANT CURRICULAR MATERIALS.
ORAL HISTORY PROJECTTHE SOCIETY IS ENGAGED IN AN ONGOING PROJECT TO RECORD THE ORAL HISTORIES OF PROMINENT RETIRED JUDGES AND OTHER LEGAL LUMINARIES OF NYS TO PRESERVE THE RECORD OF THEIR EXPERIENCES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PART OF NYS LEGAL HISTORY. IN 2023, THE SOCIETY CONTINUED TO ADD TO THE WEBSITE THE VIDEO RECORDINGS OF THE INTERVIEWS TO SUPPLEMENT THE TRANSCRIPTS.COURTHOUSE EXHIBIT THE EXHIBIT OF PANELS ACCOMPANIED BY AN AUDIO RECORDING ON THE FAMOUS LEMMON SLAVE CASE WHERE THE NY COURT OF APPEALS RECOGNIZED THE RIGHTS OF ENSLAVED PEOPLE BROUGHT INTO THE STATE FROM A SLAVE STATE TO BE FREE AND NOT PROPERTY OF ENSLAVERS CONCLUDED ITS TRAVEL TO COURTHOUSES ACROSS THE STATE IN 2023. IT TRAVELED TO 45 COURTHOUSES IN TOTAL. THE SOCIETY COORDINATED THE TRAVEL FROM COURTHOUSE TO COURTHOUSE AND HELPED THE VARIOUS COURTHOUSES DEVELOP PROGRAMMING AROUND THE EXHIBIT. THIS HAS BEEN A GREAT SUCCESS AND ENTHUSIASTICALLY RECEIVED.
