THE PURPOSE OF THE T. THOMAS FORTUNE FOUNDATION IS TO PRESERVE AND FURTHER THE CIVIL RIGHTS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE LEGACY OF T. THOMAS FORTUNE THROUGH COMMUNITY OUTREACH, EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMMING.

JANUARY 2021 THE T. THOMAS FORTUNE CULTURAL CENTER PRODUCED THE DOCUMENTARY ENTWINED FOR SURVIVAL: MONMOUTH COUNTYS NATIVE AMERICANS AND BLACK ENSLAVED POPULATION, WHICH WAS PARTIALLY FUNDED BY A GRANT FROM THE MONMOUTH COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION. THE DOCUMENTARY WAS PART OF A THREE-PART SERIES CALLED MONMOUTH COUNTY FREEDOM STORIES, WHICH WAS ARCHIVED WITH THE MONMOUTH COUNTY HISTORICAL COMMISSION. WITH COVID-19 STILL LOOMING, THE SCREENING TOOK PLACE VIA ZOOM. THE DOCUMENTARY WAS INTRODUCED BY MONMOUTH HISTORIAN RICK GEFFKEN, AND THE LARGE AUDIENCE OF UPWARDS OF 75 PEOPLE WERE ENGAGED AND THERE WAS PLENTY OF DISCUSSION AFTER THE SCREENING. MANY OF THE ANCESTORS OF SOME OF THE FEATURED NATIVE AMERICAN FAMILIES WERE A PART OF THE ZOOM SESSION THAT MADE IT A VERY INFORMATIVE EVENT. FEBRUARY 2021THIS YEARS 37TH ANNUAL NATIONAL AFRICAN AMERICAN READ-IN WAS A COMMUNITY WIDE EVENT, LED BY THE T. THOMAS FORTUNE CULTURAL CENTER, WHICH INVOLVED PILGRIM BAPTIST CHURCH, JBJ SOUL KITCHEN, MONMOUTH COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION AND TWO RIVER THEATER. ALL THE PARTICIPANTS FROM VARIOUS LOCATIONS RECITED THE POETRY AND PROSE BY AFRICAN AMERICAN WRITERS, WHICH WAS VIDEOTAPED AND SHARED WITH A ZOOM AUDIENCE. THE READ-IN KICKED OFF WITH A SPECIAL VIDEO INTRODUCTION WITH THE AMBASSADOR OF CHILDRENS LITERATURE, JAYSON REYNOLDS. THIS WAS A KID-FRIENDLY EVENT AND GREATLY APPRECIATED BY THE STUDENTS AND ADULT PARTICIPANTS INVOLVED. JUNETEENTH 2021THE EXHIBIT, THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES: A CULTURAL TEXTILE EXPERIENCE, OPENED AT THE CULTURAL CENTER FOR THIS JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION. ORNATE QUILTS WERE DISPLAYED THROUGHOUT THE CULTURAL CENTER AND WERE ON LOAN FROM STORYTELLERS IN CLOTH, A 25-YEAR-OLD QUILTING ORGANIZATION, FOUNDED BY TWO BLACK WOMEN, GLORIA DOUGLASS AND MICHELLE DAVIS, WHO MADE PRESENTATIONS ABOUT THEIR ARTFUL CREATIONS. HOME FURNISHINGS OF AFRICAN MOTIFS AND THE INCREDIBLE QUILTED ARTWORK OF THE EXTRAORDINARY FABRIC ARTIST, BISA BUTLER, WAS SHOWCASED THROUGH A VIDEO PRESENTATION. THIS EVENT WAS IN-PERSON AND IT WAS SOLD-OUT.
