CATALYST SCIENCE FUNDWE SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED THE NUMBER OF PROJECTS WE ARE CURRENTLY FUNDING AND MANAGING. NOW, 36 ACTIVE RESEARCH PROJECTS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO TRANSFORM HOW WE SAVE SPECIES. SINCE INCEPTION, WE'VE AWARDED $7,076,008 TO INNOVATIVE SCIENTISTS AROUND THE WORLD. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE: THE ADVANCED CORAL TOOK KIT, WILD GENOMES SEQUENCING PROJECT, AND THE BLACK-FOOTED FERRET GENETIC RESCUE PROJECT.
BIOTECH FOR BIRD CONSERVATIONTHIS PROGRAM GREW OUT OF A 3-DAY WORKSHOP WE HOSTED IN OCTOBER OF 2021. WE BROUGHT TOGETHER WORLD LEADERS IN AVIAN CONSERVATION TO DISCUSS THE NEW TECHNOLOGIES NEEDED TO BUILD A ROBUST BIOTECH TOOLKIT FOR BIRD CONSERVATION ANALOGOUS TO CLONING IN MAMMALS. IF WE CAN DISCOVER HOW TO MANIPULATE THE UNIQUE REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY OF BIRDS, WE CAN HELP SAVE MANY THREATENED BIRD SPECIES. THIS FUND WAS LAUNCHED WITH A $5M GRANT IN DECEMBER OF 2021 AND WILL AWARD GRANTS BEGINNING IN SUMMER 2022.
OUTREACH & WORKSHOPSTOO OFTEN, A FEAR OF UNCERTAINTY RESULTS IN INACTION, WHICH CAN LEAD TO EXTINCTION. IF WE WANT TO SOLVE THE BIODIVERSITY CRISIS, WE NEED TO RECONSIDER HOW WE THINK ABOUT RISK, INCLUDING THE RISK AND CONSEQUENCES OF DOING NOTHING. TO DO SO, REVIVE & RESTORE LAUNCHED THE INTENDED CONSEQUENCES INITIATIVE. THIS INITIATIVE GREW OUT OF THE 2020 WORKSHOP. REVIVE & RESTORE'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, RYAN PHELAN, BROUGHT THIS NEW PERSPECTIVE TO THE WORLD IN HER TED TALK "INTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF HELPING NATURE THRIVE".
SPECIAL ISSUE PUBLICATIONIN APRIL OF 2021, WE PUBLISHED A COLLECTION OF ELEVEN ARTICLES ABOUT INTENDED CONSEQUENCES IN A SPECIAL ISSUE OF THE JOURNAL CONSERVATION SCIENCE AND PRACTICE. THE ARTICLES EXAMINED THE MULTIFACETED ISSUE FROM A BROAD RANGE OF PERSPECTIVES; AND WERE AUTHORED BY EXPERTS IN THE FIELDS OF CONSERVATION BIOLOGY, BIOTECHNOLOGY, SOCIAL SCIENCE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS. THE INTENDED CONSEQUENCES SPECIAL ISSUE IS OPEN ACCESS, AND FREELY AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC.
