WPLC INITIALLY SERVED AS THE ON-THE-GROUND LEGAL TEAM FOR THE INDIGENOUS- LED RESISTANCE TO THE DAKOTA ACCESS PIPELINA (DAPL) AT STANDING ROCK, NORTH DAKOTA. SINCE THAT TIME WE HAVE PROVIDED LEGAL REPRESENTATION IN CRIMINAL AND CIVIL CASES, LEGAL EDUCATION AND OTHER LEGAL SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY TO THE WATER PROTECTOR MOVEMENT UTLITIZING STAFF AND VOLUNTEER LEGAL SERVICE WORKERS AND ATTORNEYS ALL OVER TURTLE ISLAND. OUR CRIMINAL DEFENSE PROGRAM WORK INCLUDES LEGAL EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, JAIL SUPPORT, CASE COORDINATION AND CRIMINAL DEFENSE REPRESENTATION. OUR CIVIL RIGHT PROGRAM WORK INCLUDES EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, OUTREACH AND CIVIL LEGAL REPESENTATION TO THOSE HARMED OR AT RISK OF HARM BY EXCESSIVE USE OF FORCE AND OTHER MISCONDUCT BY LAW ENFORCEMENT OR PRIVATE MILITARY CONTRACTORS AND IN DEFENSE OF INDIGENOUS SOVEREIGNTY AND SACRED SITES. WPLC ALSO ENGAGES WITH INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS MECHANISMS ON BEHALF OF INDIGENOUS HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS.
