'SPONSORED PROJECTS PROGRAM: AFTER SPONSORING OUR FIRST PROJECT IN 2017/2018 WE SAW A NEED FOR MORE IN-DEPTH SUPPORT FOR EMERGING PROJECT LEADERS AND COMMUNITIES AND EXPANDED THE PROGRAM 2020/2021 WITH NEW PROJECT LEADERS AND ESTABLISHED PROJECTS IN PUBLIC INTEREST TECHNOLOGY, OPEN DATA, AND OPEN RESEARCH. IN 2020/2021 THE SPONSORED PROJECTS PROGRAM CONSISTED OF THE FOLLOWING PROJECTS: PREREVIEW (OPEN ACCESS AND EDUCATION), OPEN REVIEW (OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE, OPEN ACCESS REVIEW PROCESSES FOR SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS), MEASUREMENT LAB (OPEN CIVIC DATA SUPPORTING INTERNET ACCESS), INVEST IN OPEN INFRASTRUCTURE (ADVOCACY FOR OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE AND OPEN KNOWLEDGE INFRASTRUCTURE), OPEN REFINE (AN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE PROJECT FOCUSED ON MAKING IT EASIER TO WORK WITH DATA), (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)INNOVATION INFORMATION INITIATIVE (OPEN PATENTS AND INNOVATION DATA), REPRODUCIBILITY FOR EVERYONE (TRAINING PEOPLE IN REPRODUCIBLE RESEARCH PRACTICES), RESEARCH SOFTWARE ALLIANCE (ADVOCACY FOR OPEN RESEARCH SOFTWARE COMMUNITIES). WE WORKED WITH EACH PROJECT TO DEVELOP THEIR PROJECT STRATEGY TO MEET GOALS.
FOUNDATIONAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM - THE DAT PROJECT: IN 2020, THE DAT COMMUNITY WORKED ON PROJECTS RELATED TO DOCUMENTATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE DATA SHARING PROTOCOL, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND PROJECT GOVERNANCE. DURING THE 2020/2021 YEAR MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDED COORDINATION OF A REGULAR COMMUNITY CALL, EXPANSION OF GOVERNANCE, AND DEVELOPMENT OF OTHER SPACES FOR DIGITAL COMMUNITY COORDINATION. DURING THIS TIME, THE COMMUNITY EXPLORED OTHER ORGANIZATIONAL AFFILIATIONS, WITH THE INTENT TO TRANSFER OPERATIONS IN THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR TO A FISCAL SPONSOR WELL POSITIONED TO SUPPORT THEIR FUTURE COMMUNITY GOALS.
COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITIES PROGRAM - INVESTS IN SOCIAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE AS A CRITICAL FOUNDATION FOR EFFECTIVE RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES. WE BELIEVE THAT A HEALTHY, ROBUST ECOSYSTEM OF COMMUNITY-CENTERED RESEARCH, DATA, AND TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVES NEEDS CARE AND INVESTMENT IN SOCIOTECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE, OR THE GOVERNANCE, CULTURE, AND PRACTICES THAT UNDERLIE AND INTERSECT ALL TECHNICAL WORK. TO THAT END, IN 2020/2021 WE CONTINUED TO GROW INVESTMENTS IN COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE VIA THE EVENT FUND, A COMMUNITY GOVERNED FUNDING PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS DATA SCIENCE COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE AROUND THE WORLD. WE ALSO PILOTED PROGRAMS AND SERVICES TO SUPPORT PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, LAUNCHING THE DIGITAL INFRASTRUCTURE INCUBATOR. (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O).THIS PROJECT INCUBATOR IS SPECIFIC TO THE CHALLENGES OF SUSTAINING INFRASTRUCTURAL PUBLIC INTEREST TECHNOLOGY, SEEKING TO INTERVENE AND ADD CAPACITY AT KEY LEVERAGE POINTS (GOVERNANCE, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, SUSTAINABILITY).
