Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
TO DEVELOP, EXTEND AND PROMOTE USE OF VARIOUS STANDARDS, DATA, AND OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE LIBRARIES WHICH SPECIFY THE RESPRESENTATION OF TEXT IN MODERN SOFTWARE. THESE OFFERINGS ALLOW DATA TO BE SHARED ACROSS MULTIPLE PLATFORMS, LANGUAGES AND COUNTRIES WITHOUT CORRUPTION. THESE SPECIFICATIONS AND SOFTWARE LIBRARIES FORM THE FOUNDATION FOR SOFTWARE INTERNATIONALIZATION IN ALL MAJOR OPERATING SYSTEMS, SEARCH ENGINES, APPLICATIONS, AND THE WEB.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
CLDR - AS THE LARGEST AND MOST COMPREHENSIVE REPOSITORY OF LOCALE DATA, THE UNICODE COMMON LOCALE DATA REPOSITORY (CLDR) PROVIDES SOFTWARE COMPANIES AND MANY OTHERS WITH KEY LANGUAGE DATA TO SUPPORT THE WORLD'S LANGUAGES AND THEIR USAGE.DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND CULTURES HAVE DIFFERENT PREFERENCES FOR THE FORMATTING OF TIMES AND DURATIONS, DATES, NUMBERS, CURRENCIES, NAMES, AND MORE. THEY ALSO HAVE DIFFERENT WORDS FOR LANGUAGES, COUNTRIES, SCRIPTS, TIME ZONES, AND EMOJI AND DIFFERENT CONVENTIONS FOR SORTING LISTS, WHICH MEASUREMENT UNITS TO USE, WHICH CALENDARS TO USE, AND MUCH MORE. CLDR DATA AND SPECIFICATIONS ENSURE THAT THESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE-SPECIFIC DIFFERENCES ARE FOLLOWED FULLY FOR MORE THAN 90 LANGUAGES. THIS DATA IS MADE AVAILABLE TO DEVELOPERS VIA SOFTWARE LIBRARIES, SUCH AS ICU4J, ICU4C, AND ICU4X; VIA PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES SUCH AS JAVA AND JAVASCRIPT; AND VIA OPERATING SYSTEMS SUCH AS ANDROID, IOS, WINDOWS, MACOS.2022 CLDR HIGHLIGHTSRELEASES 41 AND 42MORE LANGUAGES NOW UP TO 95 LANGUAGES AT THE MODERN LEVEL (SUITABLE FOR FULL UI INTERNATIONALIZATION), 6 AT THE MODERATE LEVEL (SUITABLE FOR "DOCUMENT CONTENT" INTERNATIONALIZATION), AND 29 AT THE BASIC LEVEL (SUITABLE FOR LOCALE SELECTION).PERSON NAME FORMATTING SOFTWARE NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO FORMAT PEOPLE'S NAMES, SUCH AS JOHN SMITH OR FOREIGN LANGUAGE. THE FORMATTING CAN BE SURPRISINGLY COMPLICATED: FOR EXAMPLE, PEOPLE MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT NUMBER OF NAMES, DEPENDING ON THEIR CULTURE THEY MIGHT HAVE ONLY ONE NAME ("ZENDAYA"), ONLY TWO ("ALBERT EINSTEIN"), OR THREE OR MORE. THE INITIAL RELEASE OF PERSON NAME FORMATTING HANDLES A CORE SET OF LANGUAGES, TO BE EXPANDED IN 2023.MESSAGE FORMATTING 2.0 TECH PREVIEW ICU PROVIDES THE DEFAULT INDUSTRY STANDARD FOR FORMATTING MESSAGES WITH PLACEHOLDERS: HANDLING NUMBER AND DATE FORMATTING, PLURAL SELECTION, AND MORE. HOWEVER, ITS STRUCTURE IMPOSED CONSTRAINTS THAT PREVENTED APPLICATIONS FROM MAKING FULLY USE OF THE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF DATA THAT ARE NEEDED IN MESSAGES. THE WORK IN 2022 PROVIDED AN INITIAL VERSION OF THE SPEC, WITH A TECH PREVIEW IN ICU.
UTC THE WORLD RELIES ON DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, WHICH CONSISTS OF NEARLY 150,000 CHARACTERS ACROSS THOUSANDS OF LANGUAGES AND SCRIPTS. EACH CHARACTER LETTER, SYMBOL, EMOJI, AND FUNCTION IS REPRESENTED BY A UNIQUE CODE THAT DICTATES HOW IT BEHAVES IN THE WORLD'S DIVERSE WRITING SYSTEMS. THE UNICODE STANDARD ENABLES BILLIONS OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE GLOBE TO SEAMLESSLY COMMUNICATE WITH ONE OTHER ACROSS PLATFORMS AND DEVICES.THE UNICODE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE (UTC) COLLABORATES WITH LINGUISTS, EDUCATORS, ACADEMICS, SOFTWARE PROGRAMMERS, INTERNATIONALIZATION EXPERTS, AND OTHERS IN GLOBAL ORGANIZATIONS TO OVERSEE, DEFINE, MODIFY, AND APPROVE THE SPECIFICATIONS AND DATA THAT ALLOW ANY COMPUTER, SMARTPHONE, OR DEVICE TO CONSISTENTLY DISPLAY TEXT IN THE LANGUAGES OF THE WORLD. IN 2022 THE UTC STANDARD V.15 WAS RELEASED ON SCHEDULE, ALLOWING MEMBER COMPANIES AND OTHER IMPLEMENTERS TO INCORPORATE THE NEW CHARACTERS, AND IMPLEMENT THE REVISIONS IN SPECIFICATIONS.
INTERNATIONAL COMPONENTS FOR UNICODE (ICU) IS THE WAY SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS IMPLEMENT INTERNATIONALIZATION OPERATIONS. IT IS A TRUSTED AND WIDELY USED SET OF LIBRARIES IN C/C++ AND JAVA PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES. DEVELOPERS USE ICU TO FACILITATE MULTILINGUAL SOFTWARE, ENSURING ENCODED TEXT CAN BE UNIVERSALLY INTERCHANGED, THAT DATES AND NUMBERS ARE FORMATTED TO LOCAL CUSTOMS, AND THAT TEXT MESSAGES CONFORM TO NATIVE GRAMMAR RULES.FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS, ICU HAS BEEN BUILT INTO EVERY OPERATING SYSTEM AND BROWSER. YET, AS SOFTWARE IS EVER EVOLVING, THE ICU COMMITTEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CONSIDERING FUTURE REQUESTS AND INVESTIGATING ANY WEAKNESSES AND BUGS. 2022 ICU HIGHLIGHTSRELEASES 71 AND 72ICU (C++, C, JAVA) IS THE PRIMARY VEHICLE FOR BILLIONS OF DEVICES TO USE THE DATA AND FOLLOW THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THE UNICODE STANDARDS, INCLUDING CLDR. IT THUS PROVIDES THE NEW CHARACTERS, NEW AND CHANGED PROPERTIES AND ALGORITHMS IN THE UNICODE STANDARD AND RELATED STANDARDS, PLUS THE MANY ADDITIONS TO LANGUAGE DATA AND FUNCTIONALITY IN CLDR.
