THE HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CENTER IS ORGANIZED EXCLUSIVELY FOR CHARITABLE AND EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES WITHIN THE MEANING OF SECTION 501(C)3 OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE OF 1986, AS AMENDED, INCLUDING DEVELOPING AND OPERATING A COMMUNITY SCIENCE CENTER TO ADVANCE LEARNING FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES IN THE AREAS OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

POPUP SCIENCE @HOME - STEM ACTIVITY KITS FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES TO EXPLORE STEM AT HOME AND FOR USE IN EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS. POPUP SCIENCE PROMOTES EARLY LEARNING AND PARENTS INVOLVEMENT IN THEIR CHILDRENS EDUCATION, TO HELP KIDS SUCCEED IN SCHOOL. SINCE MARCH 2020, HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CENTER HAS DEVELOPED AND DISTRIBUTED NEARLY 13,000 FREE POPUP SCIENCE @HOME STEM ACTIVITY KITS TO ENGLISH AND SPANISH-SPEAKING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES IN THE CHICAGO SOUTHLAND AND METRO CHICAGO. WEVE DISTRIBUTED THESE KITS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH AREA SCHOOLS, NONPROFITS, AND OTHER MUNICIPAL ORGANIZATIONS.
GIRLS STEAM PROGRAMS - IN PERSON EVENT AND ONLINE CLUB FOR FEMALE STUDENTS IN GRADES 8-12 TO CONNECT WITH DIVERSE MENTORS IN STEAM, PRACTICE 21ST CENTURY JOB SKILLS, AND EXPLORE CITIZEN SCIENCE. GIRLS STEAM SUCCESS PROGRAMS ADDRESS THE UNDERREPRESENTATION OF MINORITY WOMEN IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART, AND MATH. THIS ONLINE CLUB MEETS WEEKLY, JANUARY-JUNE, TO GIVE FEMALE STUDENTS IN GRADES 8-12 AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH PEER MENTORS AND DIVERSE FEMALE PROFESSIONALS IN STEAM, BUILD 21ST CENTURY JOB SKILLS, AND EXPLORE CITIZEN SCIENCE. GUEST SPEAKERS AT EACH CLUB MEETING REPRESENT A DIVERSE COHORT OF WOMEN PROFESSIONALS IN STEM EDUCATION AND CAREERS. RESEARCH SHOWS FEMALE MENTORS ARE A POWERFUL FORCE TO HELP GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN MAINTAIN CONFIDENCE IN THEIR SKILLS, FEEL A SENSE OF BELONGING, AND STAY COMMITTED TO PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS IN STEM.
CONSERVATION ECOLOGY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM - THIS INTERNSHIP IS OFFERED IN FALL AND SPRING AND IS OPEN TO 6TH-8TH GRADE STUDENTS INTERESTED IN CONSERVATION AND ECOLOGY. PARTICIPATION WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN PROJECT DEVELOPMENT, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, AND PUBLIC PRESENTATION. STUDENTS ALSO MEET AND LEARN FROM LOCAL EXPERTS IN CONSERVATION AND ECOLOGY.
HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CENTER ALSO OFFERS A NUMBER OF OTHER STEM PROGRAMS INCLUDING A MIDDLE SCHOOL CONSERVATION ECOLOGY INTERNSHIP THAT TEACHES STUDENTS HOW TO PRESERVE AND MANAGE BIODIVERSITY AND NATURAL RESOURCES. THE CHICAGO SOUTHLAND STEM NETWORK IS A PLATFORM HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CENTER CREATED FOR PARENTS, EDUCATORS, NONPROFITS, BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY LEADERS, AND POLICYMAKERS TO WORK TOGETHER TO IMPROVE REGIONAL STEM EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT. THERE ARE ALSO INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS; OPERATES A COMMUNITY MAKERSPACE; MAINTAINS A NATIVE POLLINATOR GARDEN; PRESENTS FILMS, EXHIBITS, AND A SPEAKER SERIES; TEACH KIDS' CLASSES; AND HOST ROBOTICS TEAMS. HOMEWOOD SCIENCE CENTER IS "A GREAT BIG COMMUNITY CLASSROOM I CAN RELY ON," SAID ONE LOCAL PARENT.
