IAS-IOWA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE: THE IOWA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE FURTHERS SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, SCIENCE EDUCATION, THE PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE AND RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN THESE ENDEAVORS. THE ACADEMY PUBLISHES THE JOURNAL OF THE IOWA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, THE IAS BULLETIN NEWSLETTER, SPONSORS THE IOWA JUNIOR ACADEMY OF SCIENCE, CONVENES TWO STATEWIDE CONFERENCES ANNUALLY FOR TEACHERS, SCIENTISTS, AND STUDENTS, AND FACILITATES COMMUNICATION AND COOPERATION BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE SCIENTIFIC, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS COMMUNITIES IN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS. THE ACADEMY PROVIDES PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR PRE-SERVICE AND IN-SERVICE SCIENCE TEACHERS AND SEEKS TO ENGAGE THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH INFORMAL EDUCTION OPPORTUNITIES. THE ORGANIZATION CURRENTLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 300 PROFESSIONAL, ACADEMIC INSTITUTION, AND CORPORATION MEMBERS.
ISTS-IOWA SCIENCE TEACHING SECTION: THE IOWA SCIENCE TEACHING SECTION (ISTS) ADVOCATES FOR EXCELLENCE IN SCIENCE EDUCATION BY PROMOTING PROFESSIONALISM AND EXPANDING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS. ISTS HOLDS THE ISTS FALL CONFERENCE ANNUALLY OFFERING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR 100 TO 125 IOWA SCIENCE TEACHERS. ISTS ENCOURAGES COLLABORATION AMONG TEACHERS AND PUBLISHES THE ISTS NEWSLETTER AND THE ISTS JOURNAL. ISTS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF A STATE SCIENCE TEACHER ORGANIZATION AND BENEFITS FROM BEING PART OF IOWA'S GENERAL SCIENCE ACADEMY.
IJAS-IOWA JUNIOR ACADEMY OF SCIENCE: THE IOWA JUNIOR ACADEMY OF SCIENCE PROMOTES THE STUDY OF AND PARTICIPATION IN SCIENCE BY ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY STUDENTS AND TEACHERS. THE JUNIOR ACADEMY PROVIDES MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS DOING SCIENCE RESEARCH, ENCOURAGES STUDENT RESEARCH, ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS, AND PROVIDES SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS. IT ALSO ASSISTS TEACHERS WHO SUPERVISE STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECTS. MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY VOLUNTEER TO EVALUATE STUDENT PROJECTS AND PRESENTATIONS. IT AWARDS EXCELLENCE IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT. THE IAS VISITING SCIENTIST IS AVAILABLE FOR MEMBER SCHOOLS.
