Part 3 - Line 1
THE PURPOSE OF THE ORGANIZATION SHALL BE TO PROVIDE INFORMATION AND RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES AND HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS TO AID IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF INHERITED DISORDERS AFFECTING INDIVIDUALS AND TO SUPPORT GENETIC RESEARCH.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THEY HAVE SERVED AS A HUB BETWEEN RESEARCHERS AND HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS SO
THEY HAVE SERVED AS A HUB BETWEEN RESEARCHERS AND HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS SO THAT PATIENTS CAN BENEFIT FROM THE RESULTS OF THE LABORATORIES EFFICIENTLY AND IN A TIMELY MANNER. FOR EXAMPLE: 1) THEY HAVE INFORMED AND PROVIDED LOCAL HOSPITALS, CARE CENTERS, DOCTORS AND MIDWIVES WITH TUBES SO THEY HAVE THE OPTION TO DRAW CORD BLOOD FOR TESTING GENETIC DISEASES, ESPECIALLY WHEN A PATIENT HAS AFFECTED SIBLINGS. THIS ENABLES PATIENTS WITH POSITIVE RESULTS TO START TREATMENTS IMMEDIATELY BEFORE SYMPTOMS BEGIN, OR IN THE CASE OF A TERMINAL ILLNESS TO MAKE DECISIONS CONCERNING COMFORT CARE INSTEAD OF TRANSFERRING TO A LARGER HOSPITAL TO TRY TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. IN JUST ONE INSTANCE, KNOWING THE RESULT IMMEDIATELY RESULTED IN A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE INFANT AND A SAVINGS OF 50,000 TO THE COMMUNITY BASED ON COSTS INCURRED WHEN A SIBLING WITH THE SAME GENETIC CONDITION FIVE YEARS AGO WAS TRANSFERRED TO A LARGER HOSPITAL BEFORE THE GENE WAS IDENTIFIED. NEGATIVE RESULTS PUTS A CAREGIVER AT EASE KNOWING THE CHILD IS FREE FROM THE GENETIC DISEASE, AND IF A CHILD IS SICK, KNOWING IT IS NOT RELATED TO THAT PARTICULAR GENETIC DISEASE. 2) THEY TEST FOR MANY DIFFERENT DISEASES TO LET PATIENTS KNOW IF THEY ARE AT RISK FOR SERIOUS HEALTH CONDITIONS.
