Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3
APU EXISTS TO PROVIDE THE DENVER INNER-CITY ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE, AND ACCREDITED HIGHER EDUCATION, INCLUDING GENERAL EDUCATION IN LIBERAL ARTS, AND SCIENCES, AND SPECIALIZED FIELDS OF STUDY INVOCATIONAL AND ACADEMIC MAJORS THAT LEAD TO ASSOCIATE, BACCALAUREATE, AND MASTER'S DEGREES. IN PREVIOUS TAX YEARS, THE NONPROFIT ADMINISTRATION USED DONATED FACILITIES AND DONATED VOLUNTEER TIME TO ESTIMATE TOTAL ASSETS. THIS LED TO A NET ASSET BALANCE OF $472,238 IN THE LAST TAX FORM, FILED ON JULY 13, 2020 BY CONNOR ACCOUNTING. APU LOST ACADEMIC ACCREDITATION IN 2013 DUE TO THEIR ACADEMIC ACCREDITOR CEASING OPERATIONS, THEN EVENTUALLY HAD ITS STATE AUTHORIZATION TO OPERATE REVOKED ON FEB 2, 2018. IN LATE 2020, DR. DAVID MURPHY, THE CURRENT PRESIDENT, WAS APPOINTED WITH THE PLAN TO GAIN NEW VOLUNTEERS FOR APU AND RESTART OPERATIONS WITH THE GOAL OF RENEWED STATE AUTHORIZATION AND EVENTUAL ACADEMIC ACCREDITATION. UNFORTUNATELY, THE ONGOING PANDEMIC SEVERELY HAMPERED BOTH THE AVAILABILITY OF VOLUNTEERS AND STUDENTS. CONSEQUENTLY, THIS SITUATION IS REFLECTED IN THE CURRENT TAX FILING, DONE IN THE CALENDAR YEAR RATHER THAN THE FISCAL YEAR. AT THE BEGINNING OF 2021, APU HAD AN ACTUAL CASH ACCOUNT BALANCE OF $31,193. WE TOOK IN ONLY $300 OVER THE YEAR, AN INCENTIVE TO SWITCH OUR BANK ACCOUNT TO A DIFFERENT BANK. EXPENSES WERE A MIX OF CORPORATE BOARD INSURANCE AND MONTHLY CHARGES TO MAINTAIN OUR WEBSITE. WE PAID NO SALARY, INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT, AND NO OTHER FEES. ALTHOUGH 2021 WAS PLANNED TO BE A "REBUILDING YEAR" FOR APU, IT ENDED UP BEING LARGELY A MAINTENANCE YEAR BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF AND LOSS OF VOLUNTEERS, INCLUDING OUR VOLUNTEER ACCOUNTANT, MR. DENNIS CONNOR OF CONNOR ACCOUNTING FROM BLOOMFIELD COLORADO. RIGHT NOW APU IS A SMALL GROUP OF NON-PAID VOLUNTEERS HOPING TO RESTART THE SCHOOL AS THE PANDEMIC WANES. WE APPRECIATE THE PATIENCE OF THE IRS AS WE SEEK TO SERVE THE UNDER-SERVED ELEMENTS OF THE DENVER POPULATION. THE PANDEMIC TOOK A MASSIVE TOLL ON BOTH APU VOLUNTEER AND THOSE LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES WE SEEK TO SERVE.
