THE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY PROVIDES GIFTED YOUNG MUSICIANS AN OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION IN ORCHESTRA PERFORMANCE. THE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY ALSO INTRODUCES ITS MEMBERS TO ADVANCED ORCHESTRAL LITERATURE AND PRESENTS PERFORMANCES FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF THE COMMUNITY.

PERFORMANCE TOUR - EVERY FOUR OR FIVE YEARS, THE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY GOES ON A WEEKLONG TOUR AND PERFORMS A SERIES OF CONCERTS IN OTHER COUNTRIES. THE MEMBERS GET TO EXPERIENCE AND LEARN ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES AND CULTURES ALL WHILE EXPANDING THEIR MUSICAL HORIZONS. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, THE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY TOURED AND PERFORMED IN VARIOUS VENUES IN JAPAN, INCLUDING WAKAYAMA, OSAKA, AND KYOTO. SEVENTY ONE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY MEMBERS ATTENDED THE TOUR ALONG WITH TWENTY ADULT CHAPERONES.
CONCERTS - BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY MEMBERS REHEARSE EVERY MONDAY NIGHT FROM 6:00 TO 8:30PM WITH A PROFESSIONAL CONDUCTOR AND VARIOUS SECTIONAL COACHES. REHEARSING HELPS THE STUDENTS TO LEARN TO PLAY TOGETHER AS AN ORCHESTRA. AFTER MANY REHEARSALS, THE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY PRESENTS THREE CONCERTS DURING THE YEAR THAT ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC TO ATTEND. THE FIRST CONCERT IS IN THE FALL (NOVEMBER). THE SECOND IS IN THE SPRING (MARCH OR APRIL) AND THE LAST CONCERT OF THE SEASON IS IN JUNE.
AUDITION FEES - EACH POTENTIAL BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY MEMBER MUST PARTICIPATE IN LIVE AUDITIONS THAT ARE HELD EACH FALL. THE AUDITIONS ARE OVERSEEN BY JUDGES WHO ARE MOST OFTEN ADULT MEMBERS OF THE LOCAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. THOSE WHO PERFORM A SUCCESSFUL AUDITION AS DETERMINED BY THE JUDGES ARE SELECTED FOR FULL MEMBERSHIP IN THE BAKERSFIELD YOUTH SYMPHONY. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, 110 STUDENTS AUDITIONED FOR MEMBERSHIP.
