TO PROMOTE ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL CREATIVITY BY PROVIDING A DEDICATED PREMIER COMMUNITY FOR THE ARTS.

EDUCATION PROGRAM: THE WORKHOUSE ARTS FOUNDATION PROVIDES ARTS CLASSES AND EDUCATION TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC OFFERING A TOTAL OF OVER 300 CLASSES QUARTERLY, IN APPROXIMATELY 30 DISCIPLINES, TO CHILDREN AND ADULTS OF ALL ABILITY LEVELS. THE WORKHOUSE DEDICATES APPROXIMATELY 20 TEACHING CLASSROOMS IN 7 BUILDINGS ON THE CAMPUS. IN ADDITION TO CLASSES, THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES LECTURES, TALKS, AND WORKSHOPS RELATED TO MULTIPLE DISCIPLINES. EACH YEAR APPROXIMATELY 5,000 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN MORE THAN 1,200 CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS THAT ARE TAUGHT BY MORE THAN 100 INSTRUCTORS AND TEACHING ARTISTS. APPROXIMATELY 30% OF THE INSTRUCTORS ARE ALSO WORKHOUSE CAMPUS ARTISTS.
PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM: THE WORKHOUSE ARTS FOUNDATION PROVIDES MORE THAN 300 PERFORMANCES ANNUALLY IN THEATRE, DANCE, MUSIC, AND FILM, INCLUDING OUR ANNUAL HAUNT PERFORMING ARTS EVENT AND A DRIVE-IN MOVIE SERIES. IN ADDITION TO IN-HOUSE PRODUCTIONS PRODUCED BY THE WORKHOUSE, THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PROVIDES VENUE SPACE FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND PERFORMING ARTS GROUPS TO BE ABLE TO PRESENT TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THE WORKHOUSE HAS MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE SPACES INCLUDING A 100-SEAT BLACK BOX THEATER, AN OUTDOOR PERFORMANCE TENT THAT CAN ACCOMMODATE 200 SEATS, AND VARIOUS INDOOR GALLERY SPACES FOR MORE INTIMATE (50-100 PEOPLE) PERFORMANCES, LECTURES, TALKS, AND PRESENTATIONS. THE PERFORMING ARTS ARE AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF OUR STRONG PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKS AUTHORITY, PROVIDING A REGULAR SUMMER CONCERT SERIES.
STUDIO ARTISTS AND VISUAL ARTS: VISUAL ARTISTS ARE OFFERED AFFORDABLE SPACE TO CREATE ARTWORK AND PRACTICE THEIR CRAFTS. THEY CAN ALSO EXHIBIT AND SELL THEIR ARTWORK IN THESE STUDIOS AND GALLERIES. THE WORKHOUSE SUPPOTS APPROXIMATELY 70 ART EXHIBITIONS ANNUALLY, BOTH IN STUDIO BUILDINGS AND IN MAIN EXHIBITION SPACES, A PORTION OF WHICH ARE JURIED AND COMPETITIVE IN NATURE, SEVERL OF WHICH HAVE A NATIONAL SCOPE. THE WORKHOUSE HAS DEDICATED APPROXIMATELY 60 STUDIO SPACES WITH AN AVERAGE OCCUPANCY RATE OF 95%, SUPPORTING APPROXIMATELY 65 ARTISTS WHO ARE ACCEPTED THROUGH A JURIED PROCESS. WE ALSO SUPPORT ANOTHER 30 ARTISTS, ALSO JURIED, WHO DO NOT OCCURY STUDIO SPACE BUT ARE GIVEN AN OPPORTUNITY TO EXHIBIT AND SELL THEIR WORK IN OUR ARCHES GALLERY. DISCIPLINES PRESENTED IN EXHIBITION SPAN THE BREADTH OF THE DISCIPLINE, AND INCLUDE PAINTING, GLASS, CERAMICS, SCULPTURE, FIBER, JEWELRY, MIXED MEDIA, AND PHOTOGRAPHY.
LUCY BURNS MUSEUM AND HISTORY PROGRAM: THE WORKHOUSE IS HOME TO THE NEWLY RENOVATED LUCY BURNS MUSEUM, A FREE-ADMISSION MUSEUM ON CAMPUS. THIS MUSEUM ENGAGES VISITORS IN AN EXPLORATION OF THE HISTORY OF OUR CAMPUS AS THE FORMER LORTON CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES THAT OPERATED FOR A TOTAL OF 91 YEARS (1910-2001). FROM THE PRISON'S FOUNDING TO OUR CURRENT ACTIVATION AS THE NATION'S LARGEST ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT, THE MUSEUM EXPLORES A VAST HISTORY OF CIVIL, PUBLIC, AND CULTURAL HISTORIES, INCLUDING OUR PLACE IN THE REFORMATION ERA AND OUR DIRECT TIES TO THE WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT IN AMERICA. THE LUCY BURNS MUSEUM DIRECTOR LEADS THE MUSEUM WITH NUMEROUS HIGHLY-DEDICATED AND KNOWLEDGEABLE VOLUNTEERS AND DOCENTS.
