MIDLAND TEEN COURT INSPIRES GOOD CITIZENSHIP BY PROVIDING AN EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY THROUGH YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN AN ALTERNATIVE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE, WHICH PROMOTES ACCOUNTABILITY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.

TEEN COURT PROVIDES AN ALTERNATIVE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE TO OFFER YOUNG OFFENDERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE RESTITUTION FOR THEIR OFFENSES, AND AN EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR BOTH OFFENDERS AND VOLUNTEERS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM OF JUSTICE. 24 COURT SESSIONS WERE HELD AT THE MIDLAND COUNTY COURTHOUSE ON 28 MONDAY EVENINGS. 1,368 YOUTH PARTICIPATED AT MIDLAND TEEN COURT SESSIONS: 316 YOUTH HAD A CASE HEARD BY TEEN JURIES AND ALSO SERVED AS TEEN JURORS FOR CASE REQUIREMENTS. 554 VOLUNTEER YOUTH PARTICIPATED AT COURT SESSIONS SERVING AS TEEN ATTORNEYS AND/OR JURORS. 244 YOUTH SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A CASE IN MIDLAND TEEN COURT, SERVING A TOTAL OF 5,858 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN THE PROCESS. MIDLAND TEEN COURT ALSO PRESENTED 3 EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS LED BY LOCAL EXPERTS AND ATTENDED BY 33 YOUTH. IN MARCH OF 2020, THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HIT WEST TEXAS. WE WERE UNABLE TO HAVE COURT SESSIONS OR ASSIGN IN PERSON COMMUNITY SERVICE UNTIL AUGUST 2020. WE WERE APPROVED BY OUR COURTS TO ALLOW EXTENSIONS TO COMPLETION DATES. WE CONTACTED ALL PARTICIPANTS AND PROVIDED THEM WITH ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO EARN COMMUNITY SERVICE CREDITS UNTIL THEY COULD RESUME IN PERSON COMMUNITY SERVICE. THE ALTERNATIVES INCLUDED SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVES, MASK DRIVES, FOOD DRIVES, TOY DRIVES, AS WELL AS LETTER WRITING AND ESSAYS.
