THE FRIENDS OF THE FORT WORTH NATURE CENTER MADE A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE FORT WORTH NATURE CENTER & REFUGE (FWNC&R) OVER THE YEARS. MOST RECENTLY, THE CITY OF FORT WORTH RECEIVED A 1.5 MILLION GRANT FROM THE TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT TO COMPLETE THE RESTORATION OF THE LOTUS MARSH BOARDWALK AT THE FWNC&R. THE GRANT IS MATCHED WITH 1.2 MILLION IN CITY OF FORT WORTH FUNDS AND A 300,000 DONATION FROM FACEBOOK, RAISED BY THE FRIENDS. THE FRIENDS RAISED AN ADDITIONAL 450,000 FOR TWO BISON VIEWING DECKS OVERLOOKING THE EAST AND NORTHEAST PASTURES. THIS PROJECT HAS A WIDE RANGE OF OUTCOMES THAT WILL BENEFIT BISON CONSERVATION AND EDUCATION INCLUDING ADDITIONAL SPACE FOR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS AND EXPAND BISON VIEWING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PUBLIC.
THE FRIENDS OF THE FORT WORTH NATURE CENTER (FRIENDS)MADE A MAJOR IMPACT ON THE FORT WORTH NATURE CENTER & REFUGE (FWNC&R) DURING FY2020. THE FRIENDS RECEIVED A 25,000 ANITA BERRY MARTIN MEMORIAL FUND (ABM) GRANT TO RESEARCH AND REMOVE INVASIVE PLANT SPECIES. THE FRIENDS ALSO COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION OF THE 100,000 LOTUS MARSH BOARD WALK MADE POSSIBLE BY H-E-B AND THE SID RICHARDSON FOUNDATION AS WELL AS 350,000 IN IMPROVEMENTS TO THE GREER ISLAND TRAILHEAD THANKS TO 200,000 FROM THE TEXAS PARKS AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT AND 150,000 FROM THE FRIENDS. FINALLY, THE FRIENDS COMPLETED A TRAIL COUNTER RESEARCH TO HELP FWNC&R STAFF MANAGE AND MAINTAIN THE REFUGE'S 21 MILES OF TRAILS.
