SHUMLA PRESERVES THE OLDEST KNOWN "BOOKS" IN NORTH AMERICA - THE ANCIENT NARRATIVE MURALS OF THE LOWER PECOS CANYONLANDS OF TEXAS. THROUGH DOCUMENTATION, RESEARCH, STEWARDSHIP AND EDUCATION, SHUMLA IS REVEALING LOST CHAPTERS IN NORTH AMERICAN HISTORY.

IN 2021, SHUMLA LAUNCHED THE HEARTHSTONE PROJECT, FUNDED IN PART BY GRANTS FROM THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION AND NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. THROUGH THIS PROJECT WE WILL BUILD A CHRONOLOGY OF THE MURALS OF THE LOWER PECOS AND BEGIN TO ANSWER FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTION AND MEANING. THE PROJECT IS ANCHORED IN THE FORMER ALEXANDRIA PROJECT AND UTILIZES ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCIENCE, FORMAL ART ANALYSIS AND INDIGENOUS KNOWLEDGE. WE ALSO CONTINUED OUR EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS (SHUMLA SCHOLARS AND INTERNSHIPS), COMMUNITY OUTREACH, LANDOWNER AND AGENCY STEWARDSHIP, AND PRESENTED AND PUBLISHED OUR METHODS AND FINDINGS.
