THE AAMC OPERATES THE MUSIC RESOURCE CENTER, AN AFTER-SCHOOL MUSIC PROGRAM FOR TEENAGERS IN THE DULUTH SUPERIOR AREA. THE MISSION IS TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE YOUNG PEOPLE, AND THROUGH MUSIC EQUIP THEM WITH LIFE SKILLS FOR THE FUTURE. WE ACCOMPLISH THIS MISSION THROUGH MUSIC EDUCATION AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES, AS WELL AS LIFE SKILL MENTORING. THE MRC, NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR OF OPERATION, HAS RECEIVED THREE GRANTS TO ALLOW THE AMRC TO HIRE A FULL TIME PROGRAM DIRECTOR. THE GOAL IS TO BE OPEN ONCE AGAIN IN-PERSON IN 2023.
THE AAMC CONTINUES TO FURTHER THE ARTS PORTION OF OUR MISSION BY PROVIDING AFFORDABLE ARTIST STUDIO SPACES AT THE AMORY ANNEX ART STUDIOS IMMEDIATELY ADJACENT TO THE HISTORIC ARMORY. THE ARTISTS CURRENTLY AT THE ANNEX INCLUDE BLACKSMITHS, PAINTER, VISUAL ARTIST, SEVERAL JEWELERS AND A PIANO REPAIR WORKSHOP. THE GOAL WILL BE TO RELOCATE THESE ARTISTS, AND MORE TO THE ARMORY ONCE IT IS REHABILITATED.
THE ARMORY ARTS AND MUSIC CENTER (AAMC) HAD A GOOD YEAR IN 2022 TOWARDS ITS VISION OF CREATING A MIXED-USE PROJECT IN THE ARMORY, CENTERED AROUND A PUBLIC MARKET/FOOD HALL IN THE DRILL HALL, AND INCLUDING A SHARED USE COMMERCIAL KITCHEN. THE AAMC WAS AWARDED A $672,000 MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GRANT FOR REMOVAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS FROM THE ARMORY. RECEIVED A $250,000 GRANT FROM THE MINNESOTA HISTORICAL SOCIETY FOR PARTIAL REROOFING OF THE ARMORY. HELD A COMMUNITY KITCHEN INFORMATIONAL MEETING THAT WAS ATTENDED BY 56 CITY AND COMMUNITY LEADERS DEMONSTRATING THE NEED AND ENTHUSIASM FOR THE FACILITY. APPLIED FOR A $750,000 MINNESOTA DEED MAIN STREET GRANT, WHICH WAS AWARDED IN JANUARY. 2023. CONTINUED TO WORK WITH DEVELOPER SHERMAN AND ASSOCIATES ON THE DESIGN, FUNDING, AND REDEVELOPMENT OF THE ARMORY PROJECT.
