RISING STAR AWARDS: GIVEN THE CHALLENGES OF UNDERSTANDING AND FINDING THERAPIES FOR BRAIN ILLNESSES AND INJURIES, THE ONE MIND RISING STAR AWARDS ENCOURAGE THE COMMUNITY OF RESEARCHERS TO INNOVATE IN THEIR BASIC AND TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE TO BENEFIT PATIENTS, WHILE SUPPORTING THE RESEARCH OF EMERGING LEADERS IN THE FIELD. IN 2021, ONE MIND GRANTED FOUR MAJOR AWARDS FOR RESEARCH RELATED TO PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS. CHOSEN BY ONE MIND'S SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARD THROUGH A COMPETITIVE PROCESS, EACH MAJOR RISING STAR RECIPIENT RECEIVES UP TO $300,000 TO FUND RESEARCH FOR THEIR RESEARCH PROJECT.
THROUGH THE MEDICAL FOUNDATION OF NORTH CAROLINA AT UNC, ONE MIND SUPPORTS THE AURORA PROGRAM. THE AURORA STUDY IS A MAJOR NATIONAL RESEARCH INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING, PREVENTION, AND RECOVERY OF INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED A TRAUMATIC EVENT. POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS, DEPRESSION, PAIN AND SYMPTOMS OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY ARE EPIDEMIC AMONG VETERANS AS WELL AS THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO EXPERIENCE TRAUMATIC EVENTS, SUCH AS MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISIONS, NATURAL DISASTERS, SEXUAL ASSAULT, AND THE UNEXPECTED DEATH OF A LOVED ONE. IN RECENT YEARS, THE VOLUME AND RATES OF PTS DIAGNOSIS HAVE DRAMATICALLY RISEN. THE GOALS OF THE AURORA STUDY ARE: TO DELIVER TOOLS FOR CLINICIANS TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT PATIENTS' RISK AND CARE AFTER A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE. TO IDENTIFY NEW INTERVENTION TARGETS WHICH WILL GIVE RISE TO MECHANISM-INFORMED TREATMENTS BASED ON INDIVIDUAL NEEDS.
THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, DAVIS, ONE MIND SUPPORTS THE LEARNING HEALTH CARE NETWORK AS A COMPONENT OF THE ONE MIND ASPIRE PROGRAM. ASPIRE (ACCELERATING SERIOUS PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS RECOVERY) IS ONE MIND'S INITIATIVE TO SUPPORT THOSE WITH SERIOUS PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS (SPI). ASPIRE AIMS TO PROVIDE GOLDSTANDARD, INDIVIDUALIZED CARE THAT HAS BEEN SHOWN TO DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE OUTCOMES. ONE MIND IS SUPPORTING NETWORKS FOR COORDINATED SPECIALTY CARE (CSC) PROVIDERS TO COLLABORATE AND LEARN FROM EACH OTHER TO IMPROVE PERFORMANCE AND PATIENT RECOVERY. COORDINATED SPECIALTY CARE IS CURRENTLY THE GOLD STANDARD TREATMENT FOR PSYCHOSIS, BUT MUCH REMAINS UNKNOWN ABOUT WHICH ASPECTS OF THE CARE ARE MOST EFFECTIVE AND FOR WHOM. IT IS NOW READY FOR WIDER ADOPTION IN REAL WORLD ENVIRONMENTS AND IMPLEMENTATION RESEARCH TO EVALUATE AND IMPROVE UPON ITS PERFORMANCE.
