FISH PASSAGE AND HABITAT FEATURES DESIGN PROJECTS COMPLETING ENGINEERED DESIGNS FOR BOTH FISH PASSAGE AT ROAD CROSSINGS AND RESTORATION OF OFF-CHANNEL WETLANDS AND INSTREAM FEATURES TO PROVIDE CRITICAL HABITAT FOR NATIVE SALMON AND OTHER AQUATIC SPECIES. EXTENSIVE FIELD SURVEY INFORMATION IS NEEDED IN A PROCESS TO DEVELOP 100% DESIGNS. PROJECT DESIGN TO STANDARDS SUITABLE FOR CONSIDERATION FOR FUNDING AGENCIES CURRENTLY REQUIRES CERTIFICATION BY REGISTERED ENGINEERS, ADDING SIGNIFICANT COSTS TO DEVELOP PROJECTS. PROJECTS LOCATED IN LITTLE RIVER AND SEVERAL LINDSAY CR. (MAD RIVER TRIBUTARIES).


FISH PASSAGE PROJECTS. ACTIVITIES WERE LARGELY THE WRAP-UP OF A PROJECT COMPLETED THAT RESTORED PASSAGE OF JUVENILE AND ADULT SALMON THROUGH A ROAD CROSSING AT THE MOUTH OF PANTHER CREEK, A SIGNIFICANT TRIBUTARY TO REDWOOD CREEK JUST UPSTREAM ON REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK. FINAL REVEGETATION OF THE SITE AND FISH PASSAGE PERFORMANCE SURVEYS WAS COMPLETED IN 2021.


RARE PLANT SURVEYS AND WETLAND DELINEATION MAPPING. THESE PROJECTS PROVIDED SURVEY INFORMATION AND MAPPING DOCUMENTING THE PRESENCE OR ABSENCE OF PROTECTED SPECIES OF RARE PLANTS AND JURISDICTIONAL WETLANDS AS NEEDED BY PUBLIC AGENCIES TO DESIGN AND PERMIT HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECTS. INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED TO THE CITY OF ARCATA, CITY OF EUREKA AND THE NONPROFIT DUCKS UNLIMITED TO ASSIST IN IMPLEMENTING LARGER PROJECTS BEING DEVELOPED UNDER THEIR JURISDICTION.


A. IMPLEMENTATION OF INSTREAM AND ESTUARY HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECTS. THESE NEWLY FUNDED IMPLEMENTATION PROJECTS REQUIRE SIGNIFICANT EFFORT TO SECURE REQUIRED PERMITS FROM MULTIPLE PERMITTING AGENCIES BEFORE ANY IMPLEMENTATION ACTIVITY IS ALLOWED. BOTH OF THESE IMPLEMENTATION PROJECTS WERE IN THE PERMITTING PHASE IN 2021.PROJECTS LOCATED IN LITTLE RIVER AND CANYON CREEK (MAD RIVER TRIBUTARY).B. HABITAT PROJECT DEVELOPMENT. PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM FUNDS WERE USED FOR COVERING SIGNIFICANT PERSONNEL COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH DEVELOPING CONCEPT AND DESIGNED PROJECTS INTO COMPLETE PROPOSALS FOR SUBMISSION TO PUBLIC AGENCIES FOR FUNDING. THIS FUNDING WAS INVALUABLE TO HAVE DEDICATED STAFFING TO DEVELOP COMPLEX FUNDING PROPOSALS. THIS EFFORT WAS VITAL IN SECURING $737,716 IN AGENCY FUNDING FOR HABITAT IMPROVEMENT IMPLEMENTATION PROJECTS IN 2021.
