THE JOURNALISM THE CPI WORK HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT IN THE PRODUCTION, PROMOTION, AND DEFENSE OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM IN PUERTO RICO AND ACROSS THE AMERICAS. OUR EFFORTS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO HOLDING THOSE IN POWER ACCOUNTABLE. AS A STRATEGY TO ACHIEVE OUR OBJECTIVES, WE JOIN FORCES WITH MEDIA PARTNERS IN PUERTO RICO, THE U.S. MAINLAND, AND WITH JOURNALISTS IN THE CARIBBEAN. THE REPORTING IN 2021 STAYED GROUNDED IN CORE HEALTH, ECONOMIC, EDUCATION, AND ENVIRONMENTAL STORIES, WHICH ADDRESSED ISSUES IMPACTING THE EVERYDAY LIFE OF OUR COMMUNITIES. WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THE ONGOING RECOVERY FROM HURRICANE MARIA AND THE COVERAGE OF THE PANDEMIC. IN THE EDITORIAL AREA, WE HAVE ACHIEVED ONE OF OUR STRATEGIC GOALS: SOLIDIFYING THE PUBLIC EDUCATION COVERAGE WITH TWO JOURNALISTS DEDICATED TO THIS ISSUE IN A BROAD AND TRANSVERSAL WAY.
TRANSPARENCY AND LITIGATION OUR TRANSPARENCY PROGRAM ADVANCES OUR MISSION OF PROVIDING ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND TRANSPARENCY INTENDED TO HAVE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE CITIZENS CAPABLE OF HOLDING THE POWERFUL ACCOUNTABLE. IN 2021 A LAWYER JOINED OUR TEAM AS AN EQUAL JUSTICE WORKS FELLOW TO DO IN-HOUSE LEGAL RESEARCH, ADVISORY ON STRATEGIC LITIGATION CASES, COMMUNITY OUTREACH, AND GIVE WORKSHOPS ON ACCESS TO INFORMATION. WE FILED EIGHT NEW ACCESS TO INFORMATION CASES AND GAINED ACCESS TO DOCUMENTS THROUGH TIMELY LETTERS SENT BY OUR TEAM OF LAWYERS, AND FILED THREE FOIA REQUESTS. WE DID SEVERAL FACEBOOK LIVES AND RADIO INTERVIEWS DURING THE YEAR TO UPDATE OUR AUDIENCE ABOUT THE CASES.
