METHODIST MEDICAL CENTER IS A 301-BED FULL SERVICE, ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL LOCATED IN OAK RIDGE, TN. IT IS A MEMBER OF THE COVENANT HEALTH SYSTEM.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
METHODIST MEDICAL CENTER ("METHODIST") FIRST OPENED AS AN ARMY HOSPITAL IN 1943. NOW, 80 YEARS LATER, THE HOSPITAL IS AN ADVANCED PRIMARY STROKE CENTER AND PROVIDES MEDICAL SPECIALTIES RANGING FROM CARDIOLOGY AND ORTHOPEDICS TO ONCOLOGY AND WOUND CARE. THE MEDICAL CENTER IS A 283-BED FACILITY WHICH EMPLOYS APPROXIMATELY 1,000 PEOPLE AND SERVES MORE THAN 200,000 CITIZENS IN ANDERSON, ROANE, MORGAN, CAMPBELL AND SCOTT COUNTIES. SERVICETHE HOSPITAL IS BEST KNOWN FOR ITS SERVICES IN ORTHOPEDICS, CARDIOLOGY, ONCOLOGY, REHABILITATION THERAPY SERVICES, SLEEP DIAGNOSTICS AND WOUND TREATMENT. METHODIST'S BOARD-CERTIFIED ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS ARE SKILLED IN DIAGNOSING AND TREATING BONE, MUSCLE, AND JOINT DISORDERS. THE HOSPITAL IS A BLUE DISTINCTION CENTER+ FOR KNEE AND HIP REPLACEMENT, A PROGRAM OFFERED BY THE BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELD ASSOCIATION THAT RECOGNIZES THE HIGHEST QUALITY PROVIDERS AND DOCTORS.METHODIST OFFERS A FULL CONTINUUM OF HEART-RELATED CARE AND SERVICES, INCLUDING OPEN-HEART SURGERY, AND HAS COMPLETED OVER 8,000 OPEN HEART PROCEDURES. THE CARDIAC AND PULMONARY REHABILITATION PROGRAM IS ACCREDITED BY THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF CARDIOVASCULAR AND PULMONARY REHABILITATION AND OFFERS AN INDIVIDUALIZED PLAN OF MONITORED EXERCISE AND EDUCATION IN A MEDICALLY SUPERVISED ENVIRONMENT. METHODIST OFFERS AN EXPANSION OF EXISTING SERVICES THROUGH TELEHEALTH OPERATIONS, DESIGNED TO SUPPORT THE BEDSIDE CLINICAL TEAM AND HELP BRIDGE THE ACCESS GAP, ULTIMATELY IMPROVING PATIENT OUTCOMES AND OVERALL QUALITY OF CARE:-TELEPSYCH: IMPLEMENTED 2019 WITH A TOTAL OF 1,671 PATIENT INTERACTIONS TO DATE-TELENEURO: IMPLEMENTED 2020 WITH A TOTAL OF 1,406 PATIENT INTERACTIONS TO DATE-TELEICU: IMPLEMENTED 2022 WITH A TOTAL OF 1,636 PATIENT INTERACTIONS TO DATEMETHODIST SERVED 152,190 PATIENTS IN 2022. OF THESE, 144,188 WERE OUTPATIENTS AND 8,002 WERE INPATIENTS WITH AN AVERAGE LENGTH-OF-STAY OF 5.25 DAYS. PUTTING PATIENTS FIRSTMETHODIST OFFERS PATIENTS A HIGH LEVEL OF QUALITY CARE, TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICE THAT YOU'D EXPECT TO FIND IN A NATIONALLY LEADING HOSPITAL. METHODIST HAS RECEIVED NATIONAL HONORS, BUT ALSO OFFERS PATIENTS THE CONVENIENCE OF A HOMETOWN MEDICAL CENTER THAT IS CLOSE TO THE SUPPORT OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS. RECENT AWARDS FOR 2022: CARDIOLOGY: METHODIST HAS EARNED THE MISSION:LIFELINE STEMI GOLD RECEIVING PLUS AWARD FROM THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION ("AHA"), RECOGNIZING THE HOSPITAL FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN HIGH QUALITY SYSTEMS CARE PERFORMANCE BY MEETING OR EXCEEDING GUIDELINE THERAPY RECOMMENDATIONS IN TREATING PATIENTS WITH STEMI HEART ATTACKS, AND A GOLD AWARD FOR NON-STEMI QUALITY MEASURES. STROKE: THE AHA AWARDED METHODIST THE TARGET:STROKE HONOR ROLL-ELITE PLUS DESIGNATION WHICH INDICATES THAT DOOR-TO-NEEDLE TIMES WITHIN 45 MINUTES FOR AT LEAST 75 PERCENT OF APPLICABLE PATIENTS AND DOOR-TO-NEEDLE TIMES WITHIN 30 MINUTES FOR AT LEAST 50 PERCENT OF APPLICABLE PATIENTS. METHODIST HAS ALSO EARNED THE GOLD PLUS AWARD FROM AHA FOR ITS TARGET: TYPE 2 DIABETES HONOR ROLL, WHICH AIMS TO ENSURE PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES RECEIVE THE MOST UP-TO-DATE, EVIDENCE BASED CARE WHEN HOSPITALIZED WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE OR STROKE. ADDITIONAL AWARDS INCLUDE:BREAST CENTER: PERFECT U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION SCORE 26 YEARS IN A ROWKNEE AND HIP REPLACEMENT, SPINE SURGERY: BLUE DISTINCTION CENTER+ BY BLUE CROSS BLUE SHIELDTHE HOSPITAL IS A MEMBER OF COVENANT HEALTH'S STROKE HOSPITAL NETWORK, WHICH LINKS COVENANT HEALTH'S MEMBER HOSPITALS IN ORDER TO PROVIDE OUR REGION WITH ACCESS TO RAPID DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF STROKE. METHODIST'S WOUND TREATMENT CENTER TEAM OF PHYSICIAN SPECIALISTS AND NURSES HELPS PATIENTS WITH CONDITIONS SUCH AS DIABETIC WOUNDS, VENOUS STASIS ULCERS AND RADIATION WOUNDS. HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY (HBOT) IS ONE OF SEVERAL ADVANCED TREATMENT OPTIONS AVAILABLE AT THE CENTER. HBOT STIMULATES THE FORMATION OF NEW BLOOD VESSELS, IMPROVES FLOW OF OXYGEN TO TISSUES AND INCREASES FORMATION OF FIBROUS TISSUES, HELPING PATIENTS RECOVER FROM NON-HEALING WOUNDS. METHODIST'S FAMILY BIRTHING CENTER IS A 19-BED UNIT WITH FOUR ADDITIONAL TRIAGE ROOMS. THE CENTER'S BIRTHING SUITES FEATURE THE COMFORTS OF HOME. IN ADDITION THEIR WELCOMING APPEARANCE, THE SUITES ARE HIGH-TECH DELIVERY ROOMS WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART MONITORING AND LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS. THE HOSPITAL CELEBRATED 500 BIRTHS IN 2022.METHODIST OPERATES THREE HOSPITALITY HOUSES WHICH PROVIDE FREE TEMPORARY LODGING TO CANCER PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES WHO MUST TRAVEL TO OAK RIDGE FOR EXTENDED TREATMENT. THE HOUSES ALSO ARE AVAILABLE TO OTHER PATIENTS NEEDING LONG-TERM TREATMENT AS SPACE ALLOWS. IN 2022, 1,994 NIGHTS OF STAY WERE DONATED FOR AN APPROXIMATE VALUE OF $239,280.TO HELP THOSE LESS FORTUNATE, THE HOSPITAL ALSO PARTNERS WITH THE FREE MEDICAL CLINIC TO PROVIDE 2,000 FREE TESTS AND PROCEDURES EACH YEAR TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN NEED. METHODIST'S COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT WITH RIDGEVIEW BEHAVIORAL HEALTH TARGETS ISSUES AROUND MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE, INCLUDING THE MIST PROGRAM FOR PREGNANT/YOUNG MOTHERS STRUGGLING WITH ADDICTION.IMPROVING THE COMMUNITY'S QUALITY OF LIFE THROUGH BETTER HEALTHMETHODIST HAS COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR PATIENTS, THEIR FAMILIES, AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE. WHILE MANY OF THE MEDICAL CENTER'S CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES ARE TAILORED FOR YOUNG FAMILIES, IT ALSO OFFER HEALTH MANAGEMENT CLASSES AND SUPPORT GROUPS FOR ADULTS OF ALL AGES; SMOKING CESSATION AND EXERCISE CLASSES FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO MAKE IMPORTANT LIFESTYLE CHANGES; WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, AND SPECIAL EVENTS FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY. ONE SUCH PROGRAM IS THE MEDICAL CENTER'S "TAKE ON CANCER TOGETHER" SERIES, A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE THOMPSON CANCER SURVIVAL CENTER AT METHODIST AND CANCER SUPPORT COMMUNITY OF EAST TENNESSEE. TO ENSURE CANCER PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES RECEIVED NEEDED ASSISTANCE AND RESOURCES, THIS IMPORTANT SUPPORT PROGRAM MOVED A TO A VIRTUAL PLATFORM DURING THE PANDEMIC AND DELIVERED 12 PROGRAMS BENEFITTING OVER 147 CANCER PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS IN 2021 AND 2022. FOR 2022, THE SERIES HAS RETURNED TO IN-PERSON EVENTS WHICH WILL EXPLORE TOPICS SUCH AS MANAGING STRESS, RELAXATION TECHNIQUES, THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION AND THE HEALING POWER OF MUSIC. BY WORKING TOGETHER WITH LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES, METHODIST IS PROVIDING EXPANDED OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE EXCITING FIELD OF MEDICINE. THE HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY WITH OAK RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL IS A MULTI-PATH PROGRAM THAT PREPARES STUDENTS TO MOVE SEAMLESSLY INTO POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION OR THE HEALTH CARE WORK FORCE. AS A CORE SITE FOR CLINICAL ROTATIONS FOR LINCOLN MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY'S DEBUSK COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE, ADVANCED MEDICAL STUDENTS ARE GAINING PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AS THEY WORK SIDE BY SIDE WITH METHODIST PHYSICIANS, APPLYING THEIR CLASSROOM KNOWLEDGE TO REAL-WORLD MEDICAL SITUATIONS. IN 2022 PLANNING WAS UNDERWAY FOR A NEW METHODIST FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM, WHICH WILL RECRUIT MEDICAL SCHOOL GRADUATES TO THE KNOXVILLE-OAK RIDGE AREA TO TRAIN AND BECOME THE NEXT GENERATION OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS.
