THE MARY BYRON PROJECT PROVIDED TRAINING AND INFORMATIONAL SESSIONS ON VARYING ASPECTS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE THROUGHOUT THE COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, PARTICIPATED IN COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND FORUMS CONCERNING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE COMMONWEALTH OF KENTUCKY AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, AND PROVIDED EXPERT ADVICE, OPINIONS, AND GUIDANCE IN RESPONSE TO INQUIRIES FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO VICTIMS.
THE MARY BYRON PROJECT LAUNCHED ITS INAUGURAL MARY BYRON LEGAL FELLOWS PROGRAM IN APRIL 2021, WITH ASSISTANCE FROM A GRANT FROM THE LOUISVILLE BAR FOUNDATION. THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO TRAIN AND EQUIP ATTORNEYS TO HANDLE APPEALS AS VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS IN THE MARY BYRON PROJECT'S APPELLATE ADVOCACY PROGRAM. MENTORING AND NETWORKING ARE ALSO PARTS OF THE PROGRAM. THE INAUGURAL CLASS CONSISTS OF FIVE EXCEPTIONAL ATTORNEYS. ATTORNEY PARTICIPANTS EARN CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION CREDITS FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM AND GAIN AND IMPROVE USEFUL LAWYERING SKILLS THAT WILL ASSIST THEM IN BETTER REPRESENTING SURVIVORS OF INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE.
DURING THE LAST YEAR, THE MARY BYRON PROJECT'S APPELLATE ADVOCACY PROGRAM HAS PROVIDED SERVICE WORTH MORE THAN $40,000. MORE THAN 200 HOURS HAVE BEEN SPENT PROVIDING LEGAL REPRESENTATION TO CLIENTS. NINE CASES HAVE BEEN CONSIDERED FOR POSSIBLE APPEAL. THE MARY BYRON PROJECT HAS REPRESENTED CLIENTS IN 11 APPEALS OR RELATED MATTERS. CASES HAVE BEEN REFERRED FROM JEFFERSON AND FAYETTE COUNTY AND OUTREACH TO LEGAL AID PROVIDERS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTERS ACROSS THE STATE IS EXPECTED TO INCREASE REFERRALS.
OUR TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS HAVE REACHED MORE THAN 1000 TRAINEES THIS YEAR. WE'VE TRAINED POLICE, VINE ADMINISTRATORS, LEGAL AID ATTORNEYS, VICTIM ADVOCATES, AND LOCAL JUDGES. WE HAVE CONTINUED TO PROVIDE VIRTUAL TRAININGS IN LIGHT OF CORONAVIRUS RESTRICTIONS AND CONCERNS, HAVE PARTNERED WITH APPRISS, THE KENTUCKY ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE FOR VICTIM ADVOCACY AND THE LOUISVILLE BAR ASSOCIATION FOR SOME TRAININGS, AND HAVE TAILOR-MADE TRAINING SESSIONS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF FAMILY COURT JUDGES AND OTHER GROUPS OF TRAINEES. WE MAINTAIN RECORDED TRAININGS ON OUR WEBSITE AND PROVIDE QUARTERLY VIRTUAL TRAINING ABOUT INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC AT NO COST.
