ADJUSTMENT TRAINING: PROVIDES INSTRUCTION TO BLIND OR VISUALLY IMPAIRED INDIVIDUALS IN DAILY LIVING ACTIVITIES. 1623 OLDER ADULTS RECEIVED INDEPENDENT LIVING TRAINING THAT ENABLED THEM TO REMAIN SAFE AND INDEPENDENT IN THEIR OWN HOME. ADDITIONALLY, OVER 4,469 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED INFORMATION OR REFERRAL, ATTENDED OR PARTICIPATED IN AN EVENT, TOUR OR SPEAKING ENGAGEMENT, OR VISITED OUR ON-SITE STORE. MEET JOE! HE IS AN 84 YEAR OLD RETIRED NUCLEAR SCIENTIST WHO HAS LIVED AN AMAZING LIFE. FOR MANY YEARS, HE WORKED IN MANAGEMENT FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS AND WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION. HE HAS TRAVELED THE WORLD AND SPEAKS ENGLISH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, RUSSIAN AND JAPANESE. WHEN HE RETIRED FROM THE NUCLEAR POWER PLANT INDUSTRY, HE BECAME EMPLOYED AS AN UNCOVER AGENT FOR WALT DISNEY WORLD. FOR MANY YEARS, HE ENJOYED HIS JOB, UNTIL GLAUCOMA ROBBED HIM OF HIS ABILITY TO DRIVE. HE RETIRED FROM DISNEY 10 YEARS AGO. HE HAS WORKED AS A LANDSCAPER FOR A GOLF COURSE, A BAKER, AND HAS OWNED HIS OWN RESTAURANT. JOE HAS NOT LET HIS VISUAL IMPAIRMENT SLOW HIM DOWN. HE SOUGHT HELP FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE TO IMPROVE HIS ABILITY TO TRAVEL SAFELY AND AND INCREASE HIS INDEPENDENCE. AT THE LIGHTHOUSE, HE LEARNED TO USE THE WHITE CANE AND TRAVEL SAFELY IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD AND COMMUNITY. HE WALKS 2.5 MILES EACH DAY WITH HIS CANE. HE INDEPENDENTLY TRAVELS ALL AROUND HIS COMMUNITY. HE STATES HIS CLASSES AT THE LIGHTHOUSE HAVE GIVEN HIM MORE INDEPENDENCE AND GREATER CONFIDENCE. JOE HAS BEEN AN INSPIRATION TO OTHERS IN HIS CLASS AND VIRTUAL SUPPORT GROUP WHO FEEL AS THOUGH THEIR DISABILITY IS LIMITING.
SERVICE CONTRACTS: PROVIDED REHABILITATION TECHNOLOGY TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE SEEKING TO BECOME EMPLOYED.
VOCATIONAL SERVICES: PROVIDES VOCATIONAL EVALUATIONS, JOB PLACEMENTS, AND COMPUTER TRAINING TO BLIND OR VISUALLY IMPAIRED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE SEEKING TO BECOME EMPLOYED IN COMPETITIVE EMPLOYMENT. 138 ADULTS RECEIVED TRAINING TO PREPARE FOR COLLEGE OR EMPLOYMENT. 31 ADULTS WITH ADDITIONAL DISABILTIES RECEIVED HELP SEEKING EMPLOYMENT AND TRAINING ON THE JOB.732 INDIVIDUALS AROUND THE STATE OF OF FLORIDA RECEIVED TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE FOR COLLEGE AND EMPLOYMENT. 167 VISUALLY IMPAIRED VETERANS RECEIVED TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE IN THEIR HOME TO USE THE COMPUTER OR IPAD.
