THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF THE PIEDMONT TRIAD, INC. PROVIDES A "HOME AWAY FROM HOME," IN OUR HOUSE AND FAMILY ROOMS FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN RECEIVING MEDICAL CARE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF THE PIEDMONT TRIAD, INC. OWNS AND OPERATES A 36-BEDROOM FACILITY THAT PROVIDES TEMPORARY LODGING FOR FAMILIES OF SERIOUSLY ILL CHILDREN WHO MUST LEAVE THEIR HOME COMMUNITY TO SEEK MEDICAL CARE FOR THEIR CHILDREN. MOST CHILDREN ARE PATIENTS AT BRENNER CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AT ATRIUM HEALTH WAKE FOREST BAPTIST AND NOVANT HEALTH CENTER, ALTHOUGH ANY MEDICAL FACILITY IN OUR SERVICE AREA MAY REFER PATIENTS. MORE THAN A PLACE TO STAY, THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE OFFERS ITS GUESTS CHEERFUL BEDROOMS, NOURISHING HOME-COOKED MEALS, LAUNDRY FACILITIES, PARKING, AREAS FOR RECREATION, AND THE SUPPORT OF A PROFESSIONAL STAFF AND OTHER GUESTS IN SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES. IN 2021, IN SPITE OF COVID, THE HOUSE SERVED 573 FAMILIES FROM 49 NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES, AND 11 OTHER STATES. FAMILIES ARE ASKED FOR A RENTAL DONATION OF 10.00 PER NIGHT, WHICH CAN BE WAIVED IF NECESSARY AS 83% OF OUR GUESTS CANNOT PAY THIS SMALL FEE. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE COST TO OPERATE EACH ROOM AND THE AMOUNT PAID BY OUR FAMILIES IS FUNDED BY COMMUNITY DONATIONS. CIVIC GROUPS, CHURCHES AND INDIVIDUALS PARTICIPATE IN PROVIDING FUNDING FOR THE HOUSE. IN-KIND GOODS WORTH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ARE DONATED TO THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE EACH YEAR. THESE DONATIONS ALLOW THE HOUSE TO ENHANCE THE SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE FAMILIES AND TO REDUCE EXPENDITURES IN PROGRAM, ADMINISTRATIVE AND FUNDRAISING AREAS. SOME EXAMPLES OF MAJOR IN- KIND GIFTS INCLUDE YARD WORK AND LANDSCAPING, 390 RESTAURANT CATERED MEALS FUNDED BY DONORS UNDER COVID PROTOCOLS, SOFT DRINKS, FOOD, LAUNDRY SERVICE, TOYS, AND PAPER GOODS. AS COVID RESTRICTIONS EASED, 96 VOLUNTEERS GIVING 744 HOURS TO SUPPORT THE STAFF AND FAMILIES IN THE HOUSE ON A REGULAR BASIS BY ASSISTING IN MEAL PREPARATION,GUEST RELATIONS,SPECIAL EVENTS, OFFICE AND HOUSEKEEPING DUTIES. ADDITIONALLY, 1000+ MEMBERS OF THE FRIENDS OF THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AND OVER 300 VOLUNTEERS ARE INVOLVED IN PROMOTING THE HOUSE AND IMPLEMENTING THE HOUSE'S ANNUAL FUNDRAISING PROJECTS: SPORT-A- SHIRT, SHARE-A-NIGHT,GOLF TOURNAMENT, CHARACTER BREAKFAST AND LUMINARY SALES.
THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF THE PIEDMONT TRIAD, INC. OPERATES THREE RONALD MCDONALD FAMILY ROOMS, ONE LOCATED ON THE SIXTH FLOOR OF BRENNER CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, ONE ON THE THIRD FLOOR OF FORSYTH MEDICAL CENTER,AND ONE LOCATED ON THE SIXTH FLOOR OF MOSES H. CONE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. THE FAMILY ROOMS OFFER THE DAY SERVICES OF THE RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE HOSPITAL. COMFORTABLE SEATING AREAS, A KITCHEN STOCKED WITH COMPLIMENTARY SNACKS, AND COMPUTERS WITH INTERNET ACCESS ARE AMONG THE AMENITIES PROVIDED. THE ROOMS ARE OPEN TO ANY FAMILY WITH A HOSPITALIZED PEDIATRIC PATIENT. AS THE PANDEMIC EASED, ALL THREE FAMILY ROOMS WERE OPENED BY SEPTEMBER 2021. TOTAL VOLUNTEERS OF 105 GAVE 4,512 HOURS TO STAFF THE FAMILY ROOMS. IN 2021 AFTER RE-OPENING, THE FAMILY ROOMS WELCOMED 4,206 VISITORS FROM 49 NORTH CAROLINA COUNTIES AND 10 OTHER STATES.
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF THE PIEDMONT TRIAD, INC. FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM PROVIDES ASSISTANCE, EDUCATION, AND REFERRAL SERVICES NECESSARY TO PROMOTE THE WELL BEING OF THE WHOLE FAMILY. THE PROGRAM HELPS FAMILIES ADJUST TO THEIR CHILD'S ILLNESS BY OFFERING SERVICES THAT ENRICH PARENTING AND COPING SKILLS. SUPPORT SERVICES ARE OFFERED THROUGH DAILY VISITS WITH FAMILIES AT THE HOSPITAL BY THE FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES MANAGER AND VOLUNTEERS, INFORMAL SUPPORT GROUPS, RELAXATION AND STRESS MANAGEMENT SESSIONS, RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES FOR SIBLINGS, FAMILY MEMBER BIRTHDAYS, HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS, PET THERAPY, AND BINGO. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INCLUDE ONE-ON-ONE TRAINING, PARENTING WORKSHOPS, AND QUESTION AND ANSWER SESSIONS WITH DOCTORS. ALSO AVAILABLE IS A FAMILY RESOURCE LIBRARY WITH BOOKS, VIDEOS, A COMPUTER FOR DOING RESEARCH OR SIMPLY CHECKING EMAILS, AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS. TRANSPORTATION TO MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS AND FACILITIES, AND ASSISTANCE WITH ACCESS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES IS AVAILABLE. THE PANDEMIC CLOSED THE PORTION OF THE PROGRAM PROVIDED BY VOLUNTEERS. OUR FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES MANAGER PROVIDED SUPPORT SERVICES TO GUEST FAMILIES ONE-ON-ONE VIA PERSONAL CARE KITS.
IN 2021 RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF THE PIEDMONT TRIAD, INC. MAINTAINED A HYBRID HOSPITALITY CART PROGRAM TO SERVE: (1) PARENTS THAT ARE RELUCTANT TO LEAVE THEIR CHILD'S BEDSIDE AND/OR (2) MOTHERS-TO-BE THAT ARE RECEIVING ANTEPARTUM CARE AT HOSPITAL PRIOR TO BIRTH OF A CHILD WITH MEDICAL CHALLENGES AND (3)FAMILIES RECEIVING SERVICES AT A HOSPITAL TOO SMALL TO SUPPORT A RONALD MCDONALD FAMILY ROOM. OUR THREE HOSPITALITY CARTS: ONE EACH IN THE ANTEPARTUM WINGS OF THE WAKE FOREST BAPTIST HEALTH BRENNER CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL AND NOVANT HEALTH FORSYTH MEDICAL CENTER AND ONE IN THE MATERNITY SUITES OF RANDOLPH HEALTH WERE NOT PERMITTED TO OPERATE DURING THE PANDEMIC. HOWEVER, OUR STAFF PROVIDED SNACK BAGS/ PERSONAL CARE KITS TO BE DISTRIBUTED BY HOSPITAL STAFF. A COMBINED TOTAL OF 4060 SNACK BAG/ PERSONAL CARE KITS WERE PROVIDED, SERVING 1,014 FAMILIES AND MOTHERS TO BE SPREAD OVER THE THREE HOSPITALS.
