THE NORTHEAST GEORGIA HISTORY CENTER IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING AND SHARING OUR REGIONAL HISTORY AND BEING OUR COMMUNITY'S PATHWAY TO HISTORY EDUCATION.

EXHIBIT GALLERIES: OUR MAIN EXHIBIT, THE LAND OF PROMISE, TELLS STORIES OF THOSE WHO HAVE LIVED IN NORTHEAST GEORGIA AND SERVES AS A REMINDER THAT OUR REGION IS A LAND OF PROMISE FOR EVERYONE. WE ADDITIONALLY HAVE THE MATHIS FOLK ART GALLERY, THE ED DODD GALLERY, AND OUR CHANGING EXHIBITS SPACE. ONLY ABOUT 20% OF THE HISTORY CENTER'S COLLECTION OF HISTORIC ARTIFACTS IS ON DISPLAY AT ANY ONE TIME; THE REMAINDER REMAINS IN THE ARCHIVES WHERE THE MATERIAL CULTURE OF OUR SHARED PAST IS CARED FOR AND MAINTAINED IN A PROFESSIONAL, ENVIRONMENTALLY CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT. ACCESS IS BY APPOINTMENT. THE 18TH CENTURY CABIN OF CHEROKEE INDIAN WHITE PATH, ORIGINALLY CONSTRUCTED C. 1780. THE CABIN WAS SAVED AND RESTORED BY DON COOLEY, A DESCENDENT OF WHITE PATH, AND MOVED TO THE PRESENT SITE BY JAMES MATHIS. WE ALSO ARE HOME TO THE HERRIN BLACKSMITH SHOP. WE ALSO HAVE THE AMERICAN FREEDOM GARDEN, WHERE WE PAY TRIBUTE TO AMERICA'S SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND OUTREACH: THE ADA MAE IVESTER EDUCATION CENTER AND THE COTTRELL DIGITAL STUDIO PROVIDE THE CORE OF OUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING. IN THE LAST TWELVE MONTHS THE HISTORY CENTER: - WELCOMED 6,000 CHILDREN IN SCHOOL GROUPS (A 50% INCREASE IN TWO YEARS) - WELCOMED 2,000 OTHER VISITORS FROM AS NEAR AS DOWN THE STREET AND AS FAR AWAY AS CHINA (A 31% INCREASE OVER TWO YEARS) -PROVIDED LIVE AND PREFILMED CURRICULUM-BASED DIGITAL CONTENT TO OVER 25,000 STUDENTS -HOSTED EIGHT FAMILY DAYS WITH NEARLY 1,500 ATTENDEES -PRESENTED THREE CHAUTAUQUA PROGRAMS WITH 400 ATTENDEES
READING PROGRAM: GAINESVILLE READS USING A SIMILAR, PROVEN PROGRAM IN CONNECTICUT, THE HISTORY CENTER NOW OFFERS AN AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING PROGRAM TO PROVIDE EXTRA HELP IN LITERACY TO ELEMENTARY-AGE STUDENTS WHO NEED IT. USING ONE-ON-ONE VOLUNTEERS WITH THE STUDENTS AND THE LEXIA READING APPLICATION, PARTICIPANTS ARE ABLE TO MEET ONCE A WEEK TO PRACTICE AND IMPROVE THEIR READING AND COMPREHENSION SKILLS.
