TO RESTORE, PRESERVE, PROTECT THE HISTORIC COTTAGE, ENHANCE THE WILDERNESS ASPECTS OF ITS 90+ ACRES, PROVIDE VISITATION, INTERPRETATION, EDUCATION AND FACILITIES FOR, THE HISTORIC "PINE KNOT" SITE (VA AND FEDERAL HISTORIC LANDMARK ON COTTAGE) AND FAMILY RETREAT OF PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT AND EDITH ROOSEVELT DURING THE PRESIDENT'S PRESIDENCY. PINE KNOT WAS A PLACE FOR " REST AND REPAIRS" WHERE PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT COULD PURSUE HIS LOVE OF NATURE, WILDERNESS AND WILDLIFE. THERE IS A CONSERVATION EASEMENT ON THE PROPERTY WHICH PLACES CERTAIN RESTRICTIONS ON VISITATIONS INCLUDING THE RESTRICTION THAT VISITATIONS BE ONLY BY APPOINTMENT, EXCEPT FOR PUBLIC OPENINGS PERMITTED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF HISTORIC RESOURCES, WHO HOLDS THE CONSERVATION EASEMENT ON THE SITE'S 90+ ACRES AND COTTAGE.
