FRIENDS OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (FDR), IS A NON-PROFIT GROUP MADE UP PRIMARILY OF FORMER PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. THROUGH TWO OF OUR PRIMARY PROGRAMS WE PROVIDE SMALL GRANTS TO SUPPORT PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS INVOLVING CURRENT PEACE CORPS VOLUNTEERS AND THE DOMINICAN PEOPLE WITH WHOM THEY WORK. WE DO THIS THROUGH TWO FDR PROGRAM FUNDS- THE COMMUNITY CHALLENGE FUND AND THE PROGRAM SUPPORT FUND- SUPPORTED WITH DONATIONS FROM OUR MEMBERS AND OTHERS. EACH FUND HAS A DIFFERENT EMPHASIS AND THEY ARE DESIGNED TO COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER.

THROUGH THE COMMUNITY CHALLENGE FUND, WE MADE 8 GRANTS TOTALING $70,537. THESE INCLUDED THE CONSTRUCTION OF 75 BATHROOMS; 2 COMMUNITY GREENHOUSES; CEMENT FLOORS FOR 2 HOMES; REBUILDING A WASTEWATER CANAL; REPAIRING 5 HURRICANE DAMAGED ROOFS; INSTALLING CISTERNS, A PUMP, A STORAGE TANK, AND WATER LINES TO SERVE SEVERAL COMMUNITIES; AND DRILLING 1 WELL FOR A COOPERATIVE GOAT AND FISH FARM. IN ALL, THESE PROJECTS BENEFITED APPROXIMATELY 760 HOUSEHOLDS, INCLUDING MORE THAN 1069 ADULTS AND 309 CHILDREN, ONE SCHOOL AND A COMMUNITY CENTER.


THROUGH THE PROGRAM SUPPORT FUND, WE PRODUCED 80 BRIGADA VERDE MANUALS FOR PCV USE; SUPPORTED ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRAINING FOR APPROXIMATELY 13 DOMINICANS INVOLVED IN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS; PROVIDED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO DEVELOP AN APPLICATION FOR CCF FUNDS; AND PROVIDED UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS TO 3 GRADUATES OF THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOOL.
