GRANT TO SUSTAINABLE VILLAGE RESOURCES PROGRAM IN KENYA UNDER THE SIAYA COUNTY REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE PROJECT PROGRAM. THE FUNDS WERE USED TO SUPPORT AND PROMOTE THE USE OF VETIVER GRASS TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE COMMUNITY RESILIENCE AS A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF ON FARM SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION. THINGS ACCOMPLISHED WERE: ESTABLISHMENT OF A VETIVER NURSERY TRAINING SESSIONS IMPLEMENTED TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PROVIDED SETTING FARM GUIDELINES AND DISTRIBUTION OF TRAINING MATERIALS.
PACIFIC ENGAGE TRUST BOARD IMPLEMENTING ACTIONS UNDER THE PROJECT ENTITLED 'SCALING UP ECOSYSTEM-BASED ADAPTATION ACTIONS IN GUADALCANAL SOLOMON ISLANDS. SPECIFIC ACTIONS INCLUDED BUILDING CAPACITY FOR RESIDENTS OF HONIARA AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES ON THE USE OF VETIVER GRASS TECHNOLOGY TO MITIGATE SOIL AND WATER CONSERVATION ISSUES PROVOKED BY CLIMATE CHANGE. PILOT SITES WERE ESTABLISHED DEMONSTRATING VGT. TRAINING ON VETIVER PROPAGATION WAS IMPLEMENTED. VETIVER BANKS AT THE COMMUNITY LEVEL WERE ESTABLISHED AND AN EFFORT TO ESTABLISH PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS TO PROMOTE VGT ACTIVITIES OCCURRED.
UMOJA NA IN KENYA UNITY WITH VETIVER INITIATIVE WAS A GRANT TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF VGT FOR BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE IN AGRICULTURE. ACTIVITIES IMPLEMENTED INCLUDED VGT DEMONSTRATIONS TRAINING AND FOCUS GROUP PRESENTATIONS. IN ADDITION THE PRINCIPLES OF INCOME GENERATION LINKED TO VGT IMPLEMENTATION WAS ALSO PROVIDED. THE PROGRAM UTILIZED THE SERVICES OF FOUR VETIVER ASSOCIATES WHO PROVIDED THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE UNDER THIS PROGRAM.
THE VETIVER NETWORK INTERNATIONAL GAVE OUT AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF VGT ACROSS THE GLOBE. THE VETIVER CHAMPION AWARD WENT TO MOHAMMAD SHARIFUL ISLAM A RESEARCHER IN BANGLADESH WORKING WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY.
