THE HIGHLAND SUPPORT PROJECT (THE ORGANIZATION) PROVIDES FINANCIAL AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS IN ORDER TO EMPOWER COMMUNITIES THROUGH A PROCESS OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION. THESE ORGANIZATIONS ARE INCORPORATED UNDER GUATEMALAN LAW AS NON-PROFIT OR COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATIONS DEDICATED TO CHARITABLE PURPOSES.

HIGHLAND PARTNERS FACILITATED 153 VOLUNTEERS FROM UNIVERSITY AND CHURCH GROUPS WHO WORKED IN NATIVE COMMUNITIES IN GUATEMALA AND THE WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE RESERVATION IN ARIZONA. THESE TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCES PROVIDED AN ESTIMATED 900 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES IN COMMUNITY-LED INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. A COMMUNITY-LED INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAM CONSTRUCTED 120 STOVES THAT ELIMINATE INTERNAL AIR POLLUTION, A MAJOR HEALTH ISSUE FOR DEVELOPING WORLD WOMEN AND CHILDREN. THE PROGRAM WORKS TO ORGANIZE COMMUNITY SOCIAL NETWORKS AND PROVIDE CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOPS THAT ENABLE COMMUNITIES TO SOLVE THEIR OWN PROBLEMS AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES. THE PROGRAM ALSO PLANTED 1,200 TREES PURCHASED FROM A PROGRAM-SUPPORTED WOMEN'S TREE NURSERY THAT COLLECTS OLD GROWTH SEEDS TO MAINTAIN GENETIC DIVERSITY.


ASSOCIATION OF HIGHLAND WOMEN - PROVIDED SUPPORT FOR THE FORMATION OF A REGIONAL WOMEN'S ORGANIZATION TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES TO MAYA WOMEN AND NETWORK THESE LEADERS.


BY THE ROOTS WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROVIDE COMMUNITY ORGANIZING ASSISTANCE TO TRIBAL MEMBERS ON THE WHITE MOUNTAIN APACHE RESERVATION AND TO DEVELOP COMMUNITY BASED SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS OF FOOD INSECURITY AND SOCIAL ISOLATION. THE PROGRAM CONDUCTED MONTHLY HORTICULURE WORKSHOPS AND FACILITATED ENGINEERING SUPPORT FOR SUSTAINABLE IRRIGATION PROJECTS. THE PROJECT RECLAIMED APPROXIMATELY ONE MILE OF FLOOD IRRIGATION CANALS IN THE NORTH FORK COMMUNITY.


THE DEEP ECOLOGY EDUCATION PROGRAM WAS INITIATED TO PROMOTE EPISTEMOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION. THE FOCUS OF THE PROGRAM IS PROVIDING STRUCTURED INTERNSHIPS AND FEDERAL WORK STUDY POSITIONS. 46 COLLEGE STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A MONTORING PROGRAM OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZING AND ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP. THE PROGRAM HAS NETWORKED COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS WITH CITY SCHOOLS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF POLLINATOR GARDENS ALONG WITH CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT ACTIVITIES.
