Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
THE BURN SURGERY PROGRAM IMPLEMENTED BY PHYSICIANS FOR PEACE EXISTS TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND TRAINING THAT CONTRIBUTES TO GREATER ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE IN UNDER-RESOURCED AREAS OF THE WORLD. BECAUSE BURNS ARE LIFETIME INJURIES, REQUIRING DEDICATED MEDICAL CARE FOR YEARS AFTER THE INITIAL INJURY, PFP INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL EDUCATORS (IMES) PROVIDE TRAINING AND MENTORSHIP TO AN ARRAY OF HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, INCLUDING SURGEONS, NURSES, THERAPISTS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS, WHO CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH BURN INJURIES AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF THEIR RECOVERY.
PHYSICIANS FOR PEACE (PFP) BECAME PART OF A CORE GROUP TO TRAIN THE FIRST PEDIATRIC CRITICAL CARE HEALTH PROVIDERS IN MALAWI. PFP USES A COLLABORATIVE TEACHING AND SKILLS BUILDING PROCESS TO TEACH INTENSIVE CARE SKILLS THAT INCORPORATE BEST PRACTICES AND BUILD CONFIDENCE, RESULTING IN INCREASING SURVIVAL RATES. THIS GOAL WILL BE ACHIEVED THROUGH DECREASING HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS BY UTILIZING BEST PRACTICES, FOCUSING ON BEDSIDE NURSE TRAINING TO INCREASE COMPETENCY LEVELS, AND CREATING A CULTURE OF ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH ONGOING TRAINING AND MENTORING.
PHYSICIANS FOR PEACE IS COMMITTED TO IMPROVING ACCESS TO SAFE, TIMELY SURGICAL CARE BY EDUCATING AND TRAINING MALAWIAN SURGEONS, CLINICAL OFFICERS, SURGICAL REGISTRARS AND ALLIED HEALTH PROVIDERS TO INCREASE THE COUNTRY'S SURGICAL CAPACITY, QUALITY AND RESILIENCE. TOGETHER WITH QUEEN ELIZABETH CENTRAL HOSPITAL STAFF AND COLLABORATORS, PHYSICIANS FOR PEACE IS STRIVING TO BOLSTER SURGICAL TRAINING AND EDUCATION SO THAT MALAWI'S SURGICAL WORKFORCE CAN CONTINUE TO GROW AND STRENGTHEN TO BETTER SERVE THE OVERWHELMING PATIENT NEED.
CENTRAL TO PHYSICIANS FOR PEACE'S COMMITMENT TO IMPROVING ACCESS TO SAFE, TIMELY SURGICAL CARE IS A COLLABORATION WITH QUEEN ELIZABETH CENTRAL HOSPITAL TO ADDRESS MALAWI'S SHORTAGE OF ANESTHESIA PROVIDERS, RECOGNIZING IT AS A CENTRAL LIMITING FACTOR TO PERIOPERATIVE CARE. WE PROVIDE SPONSORSHIPS FOR ANESTHESIOLOGY TRAINEES ALONG WITH TRAINING AND MENTORING FOR FUTURE ANESTHESIA PROVIDERS AND CLINICAL OFFICERS, TO EXPAND THE COUNTRY'S WORKFORCE AND STRENGTHEN CLINICAL LEADERSHIP.
