OUR MISSION IS CONNECTING PEOPLE TO THE PAST AND PRESENT BY HONORING THE LAND, HISTORY, AND COMMUNITY.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING: ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING IN 2021 INCLUDED ZOOM PROGRAMS ON BLUEBIRDS AND PROMOTING BIODIVERSITY AT THE IVY CREEK NATURAL AREA. PLANT WALKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR PARTNER THE JEFFERSON CHAPTER OF THE VIRGINIA NATIVE PLANT SOCIETY WERE CONDUCTED VIRTUALLY IN APRIL AND MAY, WITH IN-PERSON PLANT WALKS RESUMING IN JUNE. VOICES FROM THE LAND WAS A MAJOR TRAINING EVENT HELD IN OCTOBER FOR ADULTS INTERESTED IN DOING THIS INNOVATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM WITH CHILDREN. TRAINING WAS ALSO PROVIDED FOR SCHOOL TOUR GUIDES, ALTHOUGH SCHOOL TOUR NUMBERS REMAINED MUCH LOWER THAN PRE-COVID. EDUCATIONAL POSTS WERE MADE REGULARLY ON OUR WEBSITE AND ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM.
CULTURAL PROGRAMMING: THIS YEAR SAW A RENEWAL OF OUR EFFORTS IN RESEARCHING THE LAND AND ITS HISTORY. CULTURAL PROGRAMMING INCLUDED ZOOM PRESENTATIONS ON THE HISTORICAL LANDSCAPE OF THE NATURAL AREA, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN FARM NAMED RIVER VIEW FARM; EFFORTS TO PRESERVE THE FARM BUILDINGS; AND THE HISTORY OF THE MONACAN INDIANS IN THE AREA. ALL OF OUR ZOOM PRESENTATIONS HAVE BEEN POSTED ON YOUTUBE. WE TRAINED NEW BARN DOCENTS AND WERE ABLE TO REOPEN THE HISTORIC BARN FOR VISITORS. WE HOSTED VISITS AND INITIATED MEETINGS OF THE DESCENDANTS OF THE FAMILIES WHO FOUNDED AND MAINTAINED THE FARM. AS WITH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMING, WE POSTED TO THE WEBSITE, FACEBOOK, AND INSTAGRAM, AND ADDITIONALLY WROTE SOME ARTICLES FOR OUR NEWSLETTER.
PARK MANAGEMENT: WE CONTINUED TO MAINTAIN 7+ MILES OF WALKING TRAILS IN THE 219-ACRE NATURAL AREA AND PROVIDE MAPS AND INTERPRETIVE MATERIALS TO VISITORS. WE COMMISSIONED AND RECEIVED AN INVASIVE SPECIES SURVEY OF THE NATURAL AREA AND BEGAN WORK ON A CONTROL PLAN. WE PROVIDED INPUT TO ALBEMARLE COUNTY REGARDING THE REPAVING OF THE PAVED PATH CONNECTING THE PARKING LOT, EDUCATION BUILDING AND BARN. WE REOPENED THE EDUCATION BUILDING TO RENTAL BY GROUPS AND MANAGED BOOKINGS. WE ENGAGED A STONEMASON TO REPAIR THE HISTORIC STONE WALL NEAR THE FARMHOUSE.
