THE ORGANIZATION PRODUCES SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND KEEP MEMBERS INFORMED ABOUT DEVELOPMENTS IN ORNITHOLOGY INCLUDING NEWSLETTERS,THE RAVEN PUBLICATION, WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA:SERVING OVER 800 MEMBERS AND OPEN ACCESS TO THE PUBLIC.THE ORGANIZATION ALSO ALSO WORKS WITH PARTNERS TO PLAN FOR THE PUBLICATION OF THE 2ND VIRGINIA BREEDING BIRD ATLAS, AND IS RAISING FUNDS TO PAY FOR THE PUBLICATION.THE ORGANIZATION INCLUDES THE VA AVIAN RECORDS COMMITTEE WITH A MISSION TO INCREASE KNOWLEDGE OF VA BIRDS, TO EVAULATE AND ARCHIVE RECORDS OF VAGRANTS AND RARE NESTING SPECIES IN THE STATE, AND TO ENCOURAGE HIGH STANDARDS OF OBSERVATION, RECORDING AND REPORTING IN THE BIRDING COMMUNITY.
FIELD PROGRAMS - IN 2021, BRAMBLE HILL, A 30 ACRE BIRDING PRESERVE ON THE VIRGINIA/WEST VIRGINIA STATE LINE WAS DONATED TO VSO. VSO BEGAN MANAGING THE HABITAT TO ENCOURAGE THE STUDY OF BIRDS-IT IS AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC VSO HOLDS FIELD TRIPS LED BY EXPERIENCED GUIDES TO STIMULATE INTEREST IN BIRDS THROUGHOUT THE STATE, CONDUCTS A KESTREL PROJECT, AND PROVIDES AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS TO ORNITHOLOGY STUDENTS.
