ASSIST THE HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES COMMISSION OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY (THE COMMISSION) IN ENCOURAGING SELF-SUFFICIENCY OF ITS RESIDENTS, IMPLEMENTING PROGRAMS AND PLANS TO ASSIST IN THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THIS GOAL, PROVIDING SERVICES, VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE, COORDINATION, MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION AS REQUESTED BY THE COMMISSION IN THESE AREAS. FOSTER AND RECEIVE DONATIONS OF EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, SUPPLIES AND OTHER GOODS FOR THE BENEFIT OF RESIDENTS OF THE HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES COMMISSION TO ASSIST IN BREAKING THE CYCLE OF POVERTY FOR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED OR OTHER NEEDY PEOPLE. EACH YEAR, OUR ADULT EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (AEWD) PROVIDES CAREER AND SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT TRAINING IN COLLABORATION WITH SEVERAL PARTNERS IN THE COMMUNITY. AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF OUR AEWD PROGRAMS IS A SPECIALIZED 10-WEEK SMALL BUSINESS STRATEGIES COURSE, WHICH TEACHES OUR CUSTOMERS EVERYTHING ABOUT SMALL BUSINESS, FROM LEGALIZATION AND LICENSING TO MARKETING AND LONG-TERM BUSINESS PLANNING. FOR THOSE SEEKING DEGREES AND/OR VOCATIONAL CERTIFICATIONS, HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES COMMUNITY PARTNER'S, INC. (HOCP) PROVIDES TUITION ASSISTANCE TO PROPEL OUR CUSTOMERS CLOSER TO EMPLOYMENT THAT OFFERS MORE LIVABLE WAGES. HOCP'S YOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS OFFER A WIDE VARIETY OF STEM AND STEAM PROGRAMMING OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN IN ALL SCHOOL GRADE LEVELS. THE CORNERSTONE OF OUR YOUTH PROGRAMMING IS OUR STEM SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM, WHICH PROVIDES A VARIETY OF FIELD TRIPS AND ACTIVITIES IN ROBOTICS, ENGINEERING, CHESS, CULTURAL ARTS, AND OTHER ENGAGING STEM SUBJECTS. STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THESE ACTIVITIES DEMONSTRATE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF VARIOUS STEM SUBJECTS, THEY EXPRESS INCREASED INTEREST IN STEM SUBJECTS AT SCHOOL, AND THE MAJORITY REPORT A GROWING DESIRE TO PURSUE CAREERS IN THE EVER-EXPANDING STEM JOB MARKET.
