PROTECT ENDANGERED BONOBOS,PRESERVE THE TROPICAL RAINFOREST HABITAT, EMPOWER COMMUNITIES IN THE CONGO BASIN. WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES, BCI IS SAFEGUARDING BONOBOS, PRESERVING LARGE TRACTS OF RAINFOREST, BENEFITTING PEOPLE THROUGH LIVELIHOOD AND EDUCATION

REDD+ CARBON CREDIT / NATURE-BASED SOLUTIONS FINANCING: TO ENSURE SUSTAINABLE, LONG-TERM SUPPORT FOR THE BONOBO PEACE FOREST, BCI IS ACTIVELY DEVELOPING REDD+ (REDUCED EMISSIONS FROM DEFORESTATION AND DEGRADATION) CARBON CREDIT FINANCING. FORGED NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND ENGAGED IN EXTENSIVE PREPARATIONS WITH DRC GOVERNMENT, LOCAL PARTNERS, INVESTORS, AND TECHNICAL EXPERTS. ENTERED INTO A TERM SHEET WITH CARBON STREAMING CORPORATION AND SECURED INITIAL ADVANCE TO DEVELOP THE PROJECTS AT SANKURU AND KOKOLOPORI. GIVEN THE HEIGHTENED URGENCY TO MITIGATE CLIMATE CHANGE, SUSTAINED FUNDING MECHANISMS TO PRESERVE THE STANDING RAINFOREST--AND THE BIODIVERSITY WITHIN--ARE A PARAMOUNT PRIORITY.


THE BONOBO PEACE FOREST: A NETWORK OF COMMUNITY-MANAGED FOREST RESERVES AND CONCESSIONS, SPANNING A VAST AREA OF RAINFOREST HABITAT. INCLUDES TWO NATIONALLY GAZETTED NATURE RESERVES: KOKOLOPORI BONOBO RESERVE & SANKURU NATURE RESERVE, TOGETHER ENCOMPASING ALMOST 9 MILLION ACRES, PLUS FIVE ADDITIONAL COMMUNITY FORESTS PREPARING FOR LEGAL PROTECTION, WHERE BONOBOS ARE PROTECTED. CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR BONOBO MONITORING AT LILUNGU WITH THREE HABITUATED GROUPS. WITH THE HELP OF THE CDC, HELPED TO CONTAIN MONKEYPOX OUTBREAK AT KOKOLOPORI, WHICH THREATENED BONOBOS AS WELL AS HUMANS. IN-SITU ACTIVITIES INCLUDE RESERVE MANAGEMENT, WILDLIFE PROTECTION, AND SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD INITIATIVES. LONG-TERM BONOBO RESEARCH PROGRAM AT KOKOLOPORI ENTERED ITS SIXTH YEAR, NOW UNDER THE AUSPICES OF HARVARD UNIVERSITY.


AWARENESS & EDUCATION: CONTINUED OUTREACH VIA SOCIAL CHANNELS AND DRC NETWORKS TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING BONOBOS AND THEIR HABITAT. PROVIDED TRAINING FOR CONGOLESE STAFF IN VIDEOGRAPHY AND COMMUNICATIONS. PARTICIPATED IN VIRTUAL CONFERENCES AND EVENTS, INCLUDING THE AFRICAN SYMPOSIUM KEYNOTE PANEL RE: WILDLIFE CONSERVATION IN AFRICA IN THE TIME OF COVID-19, WILDLIFE CONSERVATION NETWORK EXPO. PLANNED FURTHER OUTREACH WITH CONGOLESE LUMINARIES.
