Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

A MAJOR FUNCTION OF SCOR IS PLANNING AND COORDINATING INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS AND IDENTIFICATION OF NEW PRIORITY RESEARCH TOPICS. TO CONDUCT THIS FUNCTION, SCOR SPONSORED FIVE (5) INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS IN 2021 THROUGH MEETINGS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES OF THEIR SCIENTIFIC STEERING COMMITTEES. SCOR SPONSORED NINETEEN (19) WORKING GROUPS IN 2021, WHICH DOCUMENT THE STATE OF SPECIFIC AREAS OF OCEAN SCIENCE, IDENTIFYING HIGH-PRIORITY RESEARCH TOPICS, AND ADDRESSING TECHNICAL ISSUES THAT HINDER THE ADVANCE OF OCEAN SCIENCE. FINALLY, SCOR SPONSORS COMMITTEES, WORKSHOPS, AND SYMPOSIA THAT ADDRESS OTHER ISSUES OF IMPORTANCE FOR HUMAN USES AND IMPACTS ON THE OCEAN, SUCH AS SOUTHERN OCEAN OBSERVATIONS, THE OCEAN CARBON CYCLE, AND HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS. BECAUSE OF COVID-19 TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IN 2021, MOST MEETINGS WERE HELD VIRTUALLY.

SCOR PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO SCIENTISTS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES AND COUNTRIES WITH ECONOMIES IN TRANSITION TO ATTEND MAJOR OCEAN SCIENCE MEETINGS AROUND THE WORLD. MEETING ORGANIZERS CAN APPLY TO SCOR FOR FUNDING FOR SUCH TRAVEL GRANTS AND IN A TYPICAL YEAR SCOR SUPPORTS TEN(10) MEETINGS AND THE TRAVEL COSTS OF 50-60 STUDENTS AND SCIENTISTS. BECAUSE OF COVID-19 TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS IN 2021, TRAVEL AND MEETING APPROVED GRANTS WERE EXTENDED TO 2022 OR EVEN 2023, AND SUPPORT FOR MEETINGS WAS THROUGH PAYMENT OF REGISTRATIONS FOR VIRTUAL MEETINGS.
