CONSERVATION EFFORTSOLD PUEBLO TROUT UNLIMITED HAS ADOPTED SEVERAL STREAMS ON MOUNT GRAHAM AS A PARTNERSHIP WATERS PROJECT TO MONITOR STREAM TEMPERATURES AND HELP TO IMPROVE ACCESS FOR ANGLERS INTO LOWER GRANT CREEK. THERE ARE A MULTITUDE OF OPTIONS FOR ANGLERS INTERESTED IN PURSUING TROUT ON MOUNT GRAHAM, RANGING FROM WILD GILA TROUT IN FRYE CREEK, TO APACHE TROUT IN GRANT CREEK, HYBRID TROUT IN MARIJILDA CREEK, AND BROOK TROUT IN RIGGS FLAT LAKE. OPTU ASSISTS ARIZONA GAME AND FISH DEPARTMENT BY DEPLOYING AND SUBSEQUENTLY MONITORING STREAM TEMPERATURE LOGGERS IN SEVERAL OF THE STREAMS ON THE MOUNTAIN. THIS DATA IS USED TO MONITOR FISH POPULATIONS IN THESE STREAMS, AS WELL AS PROVIDING DATA TO A BROADER EFFORT AIMED AT MONITORING CLIMATE CHANGE AND IDENTIFYING STREAMS WHICH ARE MORE SUSTAINABLE FOR TROUT OVER THE LONG TERM. OPTU WAS SUCCESSFUL IN OBTAINING AN EMBRACE-A-STREAM GRANT WHICH FUNDS TO MONITOR TEMPERATURE FLUCTUATION.
PROJECT HEALING WATERS FLY FISHING (PHWFF)PROJECT HEALING WATERS FLY FISHING (PHWFF) IS DEDICATED TO THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL REHABILITATION OF DISABLED ACTIVE MILITARY SERVICE PERSONNEL AND DISABLED VETERANS THROUGH FLY FISHING AND ASSOCIATED ACTIVITIES INCLUDING EDUCATION AND OUTINGS. OLD PUEBLO TROUT UNLIMITED SPONSORS PHWFF OF SOUTHERN ARIZONA BY ENCOURAGING FLY TYING, ROD BUILDING, AND FLY FISHING.
TROUT-IN-THE-CLASSROOM (TIC)THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN ARIZONA, OPTU IS WORKING TO BRING YOUNG PEOPLE INTO CONSERVATION THROUGH OUR TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM PROGRAMS. THESE STUDENTS ARE THE NEXT GENERATION OF OPTU LEADERS AND CONSERVATIONISTS, GIVING THEM A FIRM UNDERSTANDING OF TU'S COLLABORATIVE STEWARDSHIP APPROACH TO PROTECTING, RECONNECTING AND RESTORING OUR NATION'S TROUT AND SALMON WATERS. THE TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM PROGRAM GIVES THEM THE TOOLS THEY'LL NEED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITIES.
