AWIS-SD 2014-2015 FISCAL YEAR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:AWIS-SD SPONSORS A WIDE VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. OUR EVENTS COMMITTEE HOSTS SIX SEMINARS ANNUALLY. THE SEMINAR TOPICS RANGE FROM PERSONAL, CAREER DEVELOPMENT TO INNOVATIONS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. ALTERNATING WITH EVENTS, THE STRATEGY SESSIONS COMMITTEE HOSTS SIX MEMBERS-ONLY WORKSHOPS EVERY YEAR. THESE WORKSHOPS TACKLE ISSUES SUCH AS DEVELOPING MENTOR/MENTEE RELATIONSHIPS, PERSONAL FINANCIAL PLANNING, CONTRACT NEGOTIATION, AND MANY MORE. IN ADDITION TO THOSE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN AND NETWORK, THERE ARE ALWAYS CASUAL SOCIAL FUNCTIONS THAT ENCOURAGE OUR MEMBERS TO INTERACT. EACH YEAR, THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE AWARDS SEVERAL SCHOLARSHIPS TO YOUNG WOMEN WHO ARE PURSUING A SCIENCE CAREER. ADDITIONALLY, MEMBERS CAN CHOOSE TO ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG WOMEN SCIENTISTS BY PARTICIPATING IN OUR OUTREACH EVENTS. THE OUTREACH COMMITTEE COORDINATES SEVERAL PROGRAMS EACH YEAR, THESE RANGE FROM JUDGING SCIENCE FAIRS, TO ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING. THE LEADERSHIP NETWORK IS A SUB-GROUP OF AWIS-SD FOR MEMBERS IN SENIOR LEADERSHIP ROLES IN ACADEMIA OR INDUSTRY. ACTIVITIES FOCUS ON THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THIS PEER GROUP AND WILL CONSIST OF PRESENTATIONS BY GUEST SPEAKERS, ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS, AND/OR INFORMAL DISCUSSIONS. MONTHLY TWO DIFFERENT COFFEE CLUBS, ONE FOCUSED ON CAREER TRANSITION AND ONE FOCUSED ON MID-CAREER ISSUES, MEET IN AN ENTIRELY INFORMAL SETTING, SUCH AS A COFFEE HOUSE. JULY 2014 A BUTTERFLY FAMILY EVENT WAS HELD TO INCLUDE FAMILIES OF AWIS-SD MEMBERS IN A MEMORABLE EVENT.OPEN HOUSE ON OCTOBER 28, 2014; OPPORTUNITY FOR NETWORKING, RECOGNIZING OUR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEERS, AND LEARNING MORE ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF BEING A MEMBER OF THE AWIS FAMILY AND WHAT AWIS CAN DO FOR YOU! THIS FREE EVENT IS OPEN TO BOTH AWIS MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS.NEW YEAR CELEBRATION IN JANUARY 2015 TO CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR AND LOOK FORWARD TO THE UPCOMING YEAR.13TH WIST WAS HELD TO HONOR OUR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS ON MAY 9, 2015. THE THEME WAS: PASSION AND PURPOSE: THE PATHWAY TO SUCCESS. THE WIST CONFERENCE IS: A ONE-DAY SYMPOSIUM FOCUSING ON CAREER AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, AS WELL AS PEER NETWORKING INSPIRING, PROMINENT KEYNOTE SPEAKERS EXCITING AND INFORMATIVE WORKSHOPS, ROUND-TABLES, AND SEMINARS FOR INDIVIDUALS AT ALL STAGES OF THEIR CAREERS IN BOTH ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY TO NETWORK, DEVELOP NEW SKILLS, AND EXPLORE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES WITH 200 ATTENDEES FROM THE SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY.
