OUR MISSION IS TO INSPIRE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF NATURE, TO STUDY THE ECOLOGY OF OUR REGION, AND TO RESTORE HABITAT, AND TO CONSERVE NATIVE BIODIVERSITY. WE FULFILL OUR MISSION BY PROVIDING ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, CARRYING OUT ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH, AND RESTORING HABITAT FOR NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS. OUR 900-ACRE PROPERTY, UNDER PERMANENT PROTECTION WITH A CONSERVATION EASEMENT IN CENTRAL FAUQUIER COUNTY VIRGINIA, PROVIDES BEAUTIFUL AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR PROGRAMS.

EDUCATION. WE TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT THE NATURAL HISTORY, ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS. DURING 2021, 1,402 PRE-K-12 STUDENTS AND 698 ADULTS ATTENDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS. PARTICIPANTS IN OUR PROGRAMS GET TO SPEND TIME OUTSIDE IN NATURE. WE ALSO GIVE PEOPLE YOUNG AND OLD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN REAL SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO ASK THEIR OWN QUESTIONS ABOUT THE WAY NATURE WORKS.
RESTORATION. WE PROMOTE NATIVE SPECIES, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT ARE DECLINING, AND RESTORE, AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, THE COMMUNITY OF PLANTS AND ANIMALS THAT LIVED HERE BEFORE EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT. DURING 2021, WE CREATED A NEW POSITION OF LAND MANAGEMENT OUREACH ASSOCIATE TO SUPPORT LANDOWNERS IN OUR REGION. IN 2021 WE VISITED 76 PROPERTIES IN 11 COUNTIES TOTALING OVER 2,800 ACRES TO ADVISE LANDOWNERS MANAGING THEIR PROPERTIES TO BENEFIT NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS.
RESEARCH. WE DO SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE BEST METHODS FOR CONSERVING DECLINING PLANTS AND ANIMALS, TO UNDERSTAND THE EFFECTS OF OUR AND OTHERS RESTORATION WORK ON NATIVE BIODIVERSITY, TO LEARN ABOUT THE ECOLOGY OF THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA PIEDMONT, AND TO TEACH STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY HOW TO DO SCIENCE. EVERY YEAR WE FOCUS OUR EFFORTS ON ONE MAJOR PROJECT AND IN 2021 THAT WAS STUDYING AMERICAN KESTREL HABITAT.
