THE MISSION OF THE WORLD SEABIRD UNION IS TO SERVE AS A GLOBAL NETWORK OF SEABIRD ORGANIZATIONS, TO ENHANCE SEABIRD CONSERVATION AND RESEARCH, AND TO ASSIST DEVELOPING NATIONS IN TRAINING SCIENTISTS AND CARRYING OUT SEABIRD CONSERVATION RELATED ACTIVITIES.

CREATE AND POST ONLINE GLOBAL DATABASES OF SEABIRDS FOR USE IN INFORMED CONSERVATION ACTIONS. FOUR DATABASES ARE CURRENTLY UNDER COMPILATION. ATTENDED BY 565 SCIENTISTS FROM 52 NATIONS, THE 2ND WORLD SEABIRD CONFERENCE WAS HELD IN CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA FROM OCTOBER 26-30 PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PRESENTATION OF 411 PAPERS, 189 POSTERS, 21 SYMPOSIA AND 3 WORKSHOPS DEDICATED TO THE USE, GUIDANCE AND ONGOING DEVELOPMENT OF THE WSU DATABASES.


WSU MAINTAINS A COMMITTEE TO ASSIST EARLY CAREER SCIENTISTS, MANAGING AN ONLINE WEB CONFERENCE THAT ALLOWS YOUNG SCIENTISTS MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES WITH ESTABLISHED PEERS.


IN ORDER TO DEVELOP MORE REFINED WORLDWIDE COMMUNICATIONS LINKS, WSU SUPPORTS SEABIRDS.NET ONLINE, WHICH IS DEDICATED TO THE FACILITATION OF DATA SHARING AND COMMUNICATION AMONG INTERNATIONAL SEABIRD SCIENTISTS. THE WEBSITE SERVES AS THE GATEWAY TO THE SEABIRD INFORMATION NETWORK. THE SITE HOST THE BUSINESS WORKINGS OF THE WSU, HIGHLIGHTS CONSERVATION ISSUES AND ACTIVITIES, AND POSTS EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS.
