THE MISSION OF RISING FOR JUSTICE IS TO LEVERAGE THE COLLECTIVE FORCES OF LAW STUDENTS AND SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS WHO WORK ALONG WITH OUR EXPERIENCED ATTORNEYS TO ACHIEVE JUSTICE FOR OUR CLIENTS. WE DIRECTLY REPRESENT INDIVIDUALS WHO CANNOT AFFORD COUNSEL BEFORE THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COURTS AND VARIOUS ADMINISTRATIVE AGENCIES. WE TRAIN LAW STUDENTS FROM AREA LAW SCHOOLS IN TRIAL ADVOCACY AND OTHER LAWYERING SKILLS AND SEEK TO INSTILL IN THEM A COMMITMENT TO PRO BONO SERVICE. WE ALSO SERVE AS A FIELD PLACEMENT FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS FROM MSW PROGRAMS WHO WORK ON TEAMS WITH OUR LAW STUDENTS AND ATTORNEYS TO SERVE THE SOCIAL SERVICES NEEDS OF OUR CLIENTS THROUGH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO CLIENT REPRESENTATION.

OUR TENANT JUSTICE PROGRAM (FORMERLY REFERRED TO AS EVICTION DEFENSE SERVICES), WHICH IS STAFFED BY EXPERIENCED LAWYERS, PARAPROFESSIONALS, AS WELL AS LAW AND SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS, IS AN INNOVATIVE ADVOCACY PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES LEGAL AND SOCIAL SERVICES. THE TENANT JUSTICE PROGRAM PROVIDES ADVICE, REFERRAL, AND LIMITED AND FULL REPRESENTATION OF TENANTS IN EVICTION DEFENSE, RENT CONTROL AND SUBSIDIZED HOUSING-RELATED MATTERS BEFORE THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA COURTS AND VARIOUS ADMINISTRATIVE TRIBUNALS. THROUGH OUR CIVIL PROTECTION ORDER PROGRAM, WE REPRESENT RESPONDENTS IN CIVIL PROTECTION ORDER MATTERS. THESE SERVICES RANGE FROM LEGAL ADVICE AND REFERRAL SERVICES TO FULL REPRESENTATION. BOTH OUR TENANT JUSTICE PROGRAM AND CIVIL PROTECTION ORDER PROGRAM MAINTAIN COURT-BASED OFFICES. IN OUR EXPUNGEMENT PROGRAM, WE REPRESENT D.C. RESIDENTS WHO WISH TO CLEAR CRIMINAL ARREST AND CONVICTION RECORDS. WE SCREEN, REFER, PROVIDE DIRECT REPRESENTATION AS WELL AS PLACE CASES WITH PRO BONO COUNSEL, WHO ARE TRAINED AND MENTORED BY OUR STAFF. OUR PROGRAMS SERVE INDIGENT AND LOW-INCOME DISTRICT RESIDENTS. OUR STAFF REGULARLY CONDUCT TRAINING FOR ATTORNEYS AS WELL AS PUBLIC EDUCATION INITIATIVES DESIGNED TO INFORM DISTRICT RESIDENTS ABOUT THEIR LEGAL RIGHTS.
