SINCE INCEPTION IN 1912, THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF BALTIMORE HAS DEDICATED OVER 1 MILLION VOLUNTEER HOURS TO HELP IMPROVE OUR COMMUNITY. IN THE PAST FISCAL YEAR, WE PARTNERED WITH THE FOLLOWING NON-POFITS TO SUPPORT THE FOLLOWING INITIATIVES: (1)WOMEN'S HOUSING COALITION, THE MARYLAND FOOD BANK,AND FIRST FRUITS FARMS TO REDUCE FOOD INSECURITY, (2) SHAREBABY TO HELP LOW-INCOME FAMILIES GAIN ACCESS TO ESSENTIAL CHILDCARE ITEMS, (3) THE HAMPDEN FAMILY CENTER TO COLLECT PERSONAL GROOMING ITEMS FOR THE HOMELESS, (4) CIVIC WORKS TO TRANSFORM COMMUNITY LOTS INTO GREEN SPACES, AND (5) I SUPPORT THE GIRLS TO COLLECT MENSTRUAL SUPPLIES FOR THOSE LACKING ACCESS. OUR MEMBERS SPENT APPROXIMATELY 1,000 HOURS IN LEAGUE TRAINING DURING THE PAST FISCAL YEAR. OUR LARGEST INITIATIVE IS THE WISE PENNY, OUR BALTIMORE-BASED THRIFT SHOP. THE WISE PENNY SELLS GENTLY USED QUALITY MERCHANDISE (CLOTHING AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS)TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES. MEMBERS AND RESIDENTS DONATE ALL MERCHANDISE. THE WISE PENNY ALSO OFFERS VOLUNTEER AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO MEMBERS AND AREA COLLEGE STUDENTS.
THE LARKS - THIS SINGING ENSEMBLE IS THE OLDEST RUNNING COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT OF THE JLB. LARK'S MEMBERS VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO SING AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, INCLUDING SENIOR CARE CENTERS, HOSPITALS, AND LOCAL EVENTS. GIVEN THE SITUATION WITH COVID-19 OVER THE PAST YEAR, THE LARKS WERE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY SING AT VIRTUAL EVENTS, MAINTAINING THEIR PRESENCE IN THE COMMUNITY.
