FOUNDED IN 1957, THE DELAWARE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY OPENED TO THE PUBLIC IN 1972, AND CLOSED AT THE END OF 2020 FOR AN EXTENSIVE 17-MONTH RENOVATION. IN 2021, IN ADDITION TO THE EXHIBIT REDESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECT, THE MUSEUM HOSTED EVENTS AND PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING VIRTUAL AND OFF-SITE PROGRAMS FOR SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS, AS WELL AS EVENTS, PROGRAMS AND SUMMER CAMPS AT A PARTNER LOCATION.THE MUSEUM'S NAME WAS OFFICIALLY CHANGED TO THE DELAWARE MUSEUM OF NATURE AND SCIENCE IN EARLY 2022. ON MAY 23, 2022, THE MUSEUM REOPENED TO THE PUBLIC WITH ALL NEW EXHIBITS, INCLUDING THE REGIONAL JOURNEY GALLERY, THE ALISON K. BRADFORD GLOBAL JOURNEY GALLERY, THE ELLICE AND ROSA MCDONALD PALEOZONE, THE SKYLIGHT ATRIUM, AND THE BILL AND DENISE SPENCE DISCOVERY GALLERY, CREATING A 21ST-CENTURY MUSEUM EXPERIENCE FOR OUR GUESTS.
THE DELAWARE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY MAINTAINS A LIBRARY, LABORATORIES, AND EXTENSIVE SCIENTIFIC COLLECTIONS USED BY RESEARCHERS WORLDWIDE. THESE COLLECTIONS INCLUDE: MALACOLOGY (2 MILLION SPECIMENS), ORNITHOLOGY (113,000 SPECIMENS), MAMMOLOGY (6,000 SPECIMENS), AND SMALLER ENTOMOLOGY AND BOTANY COLLECTIONS.
